In a move to resolve the two-year vacancy for the Alaafin of Oyo throne, Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the appointment of Abimbola Owoade, a young Canadian-based businessman, as the new monarch.
The decision followed a comprehensive review of the Oyomesi’s recommendation, which was based on extensive consultations and traditional divinations. The announcement came just a day after Makinde proposed changes to the selection process — a suggestion the Oyomesi opposed, threatening legal action if their recommendation was dismissed.
The governor’s approval was confirmed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Friday.
According to the statement, “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo.”
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, described the appointment as a significant step that ends the over two-year interregnum following the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on April 22, 2022.
