Maternal Health: Kano State Government Increases Investment

The Kano State Government says it has increased funding and investment to maternal health in order to checkmate maternal and infant mortality.

This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa, at a news conference to commemorate the 2022 National Safe Motherhood Day.

The day is a global initiative marked annually on April 11, to raise awareness about ensuring adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal services.

The 2022 celebration is themed, “Access to Quality Maternal Care, a Right for Every Pregnant Woman”, while the slogan for the year is “Save Mother, Save the Future.”

Dr. Tsanyawa said that the state government prioritised the health of citizens and women in particular, and decided to increase the state’s budgetary allocation to health and maternal mortality programmes.

According to him, the Kano State government increased its annual budgetary allocation for Maternal and Child Health Services from N20m in 2015 to N100m in 2022.

He further revealed that the state also invested in the training of 1,130 female community volunteers to strengthen its commitment to women’s health.

The commissioner said 220 focal persons had community engagements to promote Maternal and Child Health services.

Dr. Tsanyawa said due to the state government’s commitment to continually improve the health sector, it received high recognition, which translated into awards.

He said the awards include the ‘Best Performing State in Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response in Nigeria’.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to further improve the lives and safety of mothers and children.
