Major League Baseball has handed down suspensions and fines to Washington Nationals pitcher Jorge Lopez and manager Dave Martinez following an incident during Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Lopez received a three-game suspension, while Martinez was suspended for one game, which he will serve on Thursday. MLB determined that Lopez intentionally threw at Pirates veteran Andrew McCutchen, prompting the disciplinary action. Both individuals were also fined an undisclosed amount.
The incident occurred in the seventh inning with the Pirates leading 2-0 and two runners on base. A 1-1 pitch from Lopez narrowly missed McCutchen’s head, sparking tensions and causing both benches to clear. Order was quickly restored, and Lopez was ejected from the game.
McCutchen later walked to load the bases, followed by Oneil Cruz’s first career grand slam, securing a 6-1 victory for the Pirates.
Lopez, who is appealing the suspension, expressed regret after the game:
“I apologize for everything. I didn’t make any pitch on purpose right there. I’ve been trying to make adjustments and find my rhythm with my delivery. It’s really miserable that happened. I regret what just happened.”
