Morocco foreign ministry has expressed concern over the death of a Moroccan national during a police arrest in Bologna, Italy, and has called for a “thorough investigation” into the incident.
Abderrahim Fakir, who was born in Morocco, died on Sunday after officers were summoned to the Pilastro neighbourhood on the outskirts of the northern Italian city to respond to a man acting aggressively and damaging a vehicle.
In a statement issued Tuesday night, Morocco’s ministry demanded that authorities provide a full account of the circumstances surrounding the death and that accountability be established.
The death sparked anti-police protests in Bologna on Monday, during which dozens of officers were injured. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for a complete investigation into the incident and condemned the violent clashes that followed.
