Mpox Poses A Major Risk To People Living With HIV – NACA

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS has urged the public to take preventive measures against the growing threat of Mpox, in line with its dedication to ensuring the health and safety of Nigerians, particularly those living with HIV.

The Director General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori, said this in a statement signed by the agency’s Head of Public Relations & Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe.

Ilori emphasized the heightened risk faced by people living with HIV, stating, “While anyone can contract Mpox, individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those living with HIV, may experience more severe symptoms.

She further added that NACA is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with public health authorities to ensure that adequate information and resources are accessible.

She said, “Our priority remains the health and well-being of Nigerians, especially those who are most vulnerable. We are committed to providing the necessary support to help people living with HIV navigate this added challenge.”

Dr. Ilori advised the public to remain vigilant and informed, underscoring the importance of early detection and treatment.

Mpox is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease occurring in several African countries, including the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. Although the precise source of the virus is still unknown, rodents, squirrels, and monkeys are thought to be involved in its spread.  The Mpox virus can spread from animal to human and from human to human.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention advised the public to avoid people exhibiting symptoms, especially those with rashes or skin lesions, to stop the spread of the mpox virus.

Additionally, it urged the public to practice good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
