MTN Apologizes for 200% Data Price Hike, Urges Customers to ‘Forgive and Forget’

MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecom operator, has publicly apologized to its customers following widespread backlash over a sudden 200% increase in the price of its popular 15GB data plan.

The price adjustment saw the cost of a 15GB weekly bundle surge from N2,000 to N6,000, catching many subscribers off guard and triggering an outcry on social media.

In a message shared on Thursday, MTN adopted an informal, conversational tone to acknowledge customers’ frustration, admitting the abrupt price change was a misstep.

“To our 15GB digital bundle lovers, we understand—you’re upset. Waking up to a 200% increase on your favorite data plan must have been frustrating,” MTN stated.

The message continued, “We could give plenty of explanations, but honestly, all that is just talk. We get it—we messed up. Let’s just say it was a mistake.”

Appealing for understanding, the telecom giant urged customers to let go of their anger. “This is the season of love, so please forgive and forget. You mean the world to us, and we’ll continue showing you how much. Let’s keep our relationship strong. Thank you for your understanding.”

As of now, MTN is the only operator to implement the price hike. However, Airtel and Globacom are expected to follow suit after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% tariff increase earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed the new tariff implementation, calling for an immediate reversal by telecom providers.
