Nasarawa: Women Stage Protest, Seek Polls Cancellation

Over 500 women in Nasarawa State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest, demanding for justice on the declaration of Governor Abdullahi Sule as the winner of just concluded governorship election held on Saturday 18 March, 2023.

The women who came out in their numbers were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as INEC should give us back our mandate; let our votes count, Ombugadu won; we say no to election manipulation; Ombugadu won.

Leader of the group, Stella Oboshi, while speaking on behalf of the other women during the peaceful protest at the Lafia office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, said the purpose of the protest was to channel their grievances over the election results declared by Prof. Ishaya Tanko, the Vice chancellor of the University of Jos.

She further lamented that INEC went ahead to announce a winner of the governorship election even though there was contention in the results that emanated from Gayam and Ciroma electoral wards in the state capital.

Our correspondent reports that in the just concluded election, the incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Sule, scored 347, 209 votes in the contest with his closest challenger, David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party who scored 283, 016 votes while Abdullahi Maidoya of the New Nigeria People’s Party scored 11,726 votes.
