Nasir El-Rufai Appears In Court As Bail Hearing Continues

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, appeared at the Federal High Court Kaduna on Wednesday morning for the continuation of his bail hearing.

El-Rufai arrived at the court premises at about 9:00am (WAT) and stepped out of his vehicle a few minutes later, drawing attention from security personnel and a small group of observers gathered outside the complex.

The resumed hearing follows a delay during Tuesday’s proceedings, which were disrupted by a series of legal moves from the defence team. Initially, the defence filed a motion asking the presiding judge, Rilwan M. Aikawa, to recuse himself over alleged bias and a pending petition.

This request raised concerns about the court’s neutrality and triggered an immediate reaction from the prosecution. However, in a surprising turn, the defence later submitted another motion seeking to withdraw its earlier application for the judge to step aside.

The conflicting motions led to heated exchanges between both parties and ultimately stalled progress on the bail application.

Complicating matters further, the prosecution filed a counter-affidavit opposing El-Rufai’s bail request, leaving the defence with limited time to review and respond to the new submissions.

In light of these developments, Justice Aikawa adjourned the case to Wednesday for the continuation of the hearing.

Security was visibly heightened around the court premises, with armed personnel stationed both inside and outside the complex to control movement and maintain order. Journalists were denied access to the courtroom as strict security measures were enforced throughout the proceedings.
