The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has started a coordinated, rapid assessment to evaluate the impact of the 2024 floods across Nigeria. Partnering with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and development organizations, NEMA shared the announcement on its official X handle on Wednesday.
According to NEMA, this joint assessment is designed to harmonize data gathered by NEMA’s Emergency Operation Centre with insights from partners, producing a nationally validated report on the flood’s impact.
NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, highlighted the agency’s collaboration with SEMAs, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the International Organization for Migration, and the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs.
“The assessment will focus on the flood’s effects on shelter, livelihoods, food security, water, sanitation, hygiene, and access to education and information,” the statement read. Umar added that the process would engage affected communities to understand how they can be best supported in their recovery efforts, aligning with global best practices.
