NFF Laments the Lack of Quality Pitches in Nigeria

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has raised concerns about the lack of quality stadiums in Nigeria suitable for the Super Eagles to host Grade A matches. Speaking on Tuesday after inspecting the ongoing renovations at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State, Gusau emphasized the need for alternative venues beyond the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

During the inspection, which he conducted alongside Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, Gusau praised the governor’s commitment to upgrading the stadium. He assured that the NFF would provide technical expertise to ensure that the facility meets international standards for high-profile matches.

“I was thrilled to learn that Governor Alia has initiated the renovation of the Aper Aku Stadium. Given the current state of sports infrastructure in Nigeria, this development brings me great satisfaction,” Gusau said.

He highlighted the NFF’s growing concern that the Super Eagles currently rely on just one stadium in Uyo for Grade A matches, which he said is not ideal for a country with Nigeria’s football heritage. Gusau expressed optimism that the renovation of the Aper Aku Stadium could offer a new option for hosting these crucial games.

“Our aim is to see that we quickly establish an alternative venue for our matches, and with Governor Alia’s dedication, I believe it’s achievable,” he added.

Gusau also discussed the NFF’s initiatives to revive grassroots football in Nigeria. He announced the introduction of a trophy for the Governor’s Cup and another for a nationwide U-15 tournament as part of his strategy to promote youth football and discover emerging talents.

“The best way to nurture grassroots football is through U-15 tournaments and the Governor’s Cup. These platforms will help us identify the abundant young talents in the country. We want clubs like Lobi Stars to develop their players locally instead of always seeking talent from outside,” Gusau explained.

Governor Alia, in response, expressed gratitude for the NFF’s support and emphasized his administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports in Benue State. He highlighted the state’s history of producing top athletes and vowed to invest more in sports development to restore its former glory.

With these efforts, the NFF aims to enhance football infrastructure across Nigeria and reignite interest in grassroots sports to foster the next generation of football stars.
