Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the residents, emphasizing that security remains a top priority for his government.
In a state address on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Governor Makinde underscored the need for stronger democratic institutions and the promotion of national unity.
During his speech, Makinde stated, “My beloved people of Oyo State, as we celebrate 64 years of Nigeria’s independence today, it is a time to reflect on our collective journey—a path filled with moments of pride, struggle, and resilience. We have crawled, walked, stumbled, and risen, showing the unyielding spirit that defines us as Nigerians.”
The governor highlighted Oyo State’s progress in development, crediting the people’s support over the past five years for the achievements made.
“In Oyo State, we have embraced that same resilience, moving from accelerated development to sustainable growth, with a focus on elevating our people from poverty to prosperity,” he noted.
Addressing the country’s ongoing economic difficulties, Governor Makinde urged the people to remain optimistic, saying, “They say the darkest hour is just before dawn. As we endure these tough economic times, we must remember our spirit of resilience. The sun will rise again.”
Makinde took the opportunity to unveil new initiatives designed to promote economic recovery and support local businesses. He announced the expansion of the guarantor base for small-scale loans to agricpreneurs under the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State, which now includes community development associations, farmers’ groups, and artisans.
The governor also extended the state’s transportation subsidy for another six months under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery Scheme. This extension will now cover support for trucks to facilitate produce evacuation, in partnership with various trader and agricultural associations.
In his address, Makinde called for unity, stating, “Now is the time to focus on what unites us, not what divides us. Our shared identity, culture, and history are what make us stronger. Let us not mistake our friends for our enemies.”
On the issue of security, Governor Makinde reassured Oyo residents of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure their protection. He informed them about an increased security presence during the celebrations, urging calm and emphasizing that it was for their safety and to ensure a peaceful Independence Day.
