In response to escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the registration of over 500 Nigerian citizens seeking evacuation from Lebanon. Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the ministry’s spokesperson, shared this update in Abuja on Sunday.
Although an estimated 2,000 Nigerians reside in Lebanon, many have chosen not to return despite encouragement from the Nigerian mission. The Federal Government has activated evacuation procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.
Abu-Obe emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens and noted that emergency protocols are in place for their swift and secure evacuation. The ministry is working closely with key agencies, including the Presidency, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigerian Immigration Service, to facilitate this operation.
The Nigerian Embassy in Beirut has issued advisories urging citizens to remain indoors and adhere to local authorities’ guidance. Abu-Obe also encouraged unregistered citizens to reach out to the embassy via email at info@mfa.gov.ng and advised against resisting evacuation due to the worsening situation. He expressed appreciation for the understanding of the Nigerian community and reassured them of the government’s ongoing monitoring of the situation.
