Nigeria Performs First Minimally Invasive Heart Surgeries on Four Patients

Nigeria has performed its first-ever minimally invasive open heart surgeries on four patients in a private hospital in Lagos.

The operations were coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) – Off-Pump and Mitral valve replacement carried out without big cuts on the chests, while the hearts were beating.

A renowned Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine, Kamar Adeleke, made this known to journalists in Lagos, revealing that one of the patients was an 81-year-old woman who needed a valve replacement.

He disclosed that the surgeries carried out by the Tristate Healthcare Systems, which is located Lekki, put Nigeria on the world map and on the list of the few countries in the developing world with the capacity to perform such surgical procedures.

Prof. Adeleke revealed that the facility had before now, carried out over 120 normal open heart surgeries nationwide.

According to him, before the minimally invasive open heart surgeries were performed, Nigerians could only get such delicate in the West,   India and South Africa.

He said explained that the facility uses minimally evasive techniques that have never been done in Nigeria, which minimises how much incision is made on the chest during open heart surgery and reduces the amount of blood lost by patient blood, less pain and time spent in the theatre.

“Apart from the fact that it is minimally invasive, we also did not stop the heart. The heart was beating while the blood vessels were bypassed.

“As a Nigerian that loves Nigeria, you can’t be happier that Nigeria can really do this, Nigeria can come out of a mess. When Nigeria puts its mind to something, it becomes doable.”
