Ezekiel Nathaniel made a strong start in his quest for a podium appearance as he made it through to the semifinal after finishing second in his 400m hurdles heat on Monday morning.

The 21-year-old Nigerian athlete crossed the line in 48.38s to book an automatic place in the semis after behind Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke who ran 48.17s. Kenyan athlete Wiseman Mukhobe finished third in 48.58s.

But the Nigerian will have to better his time when he takes others in the first semi-final race because he posted the sixth-best time in the pool. Karsten Warholm of Norway returned the best time with 47:47 seconds
