NUC Approves Aeronautics and Aerospace University for Ebonyi State

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering in Ezza, Ebonyi State, marking a major milestone in the state’s push for educational and technological advancement.

The operational licence was presented to the Ebonyi State Government at the NUC headquarters in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, who announced that the new institution becomes the 69th state-owned university in Nigeria and raises the total number of universities in the country to 300.

Prof. Ribadu described the approval as a “historic milestone” that underscores the Ebonyi State Government’s commitment to education, innovation, and youth empowerment. He noted that the university will be dedicated to aeronautics and aerospace engineering, a strategic focus aimed at developing local expertise in aviation and advanced technologies.

With this latest addition, Ebonyi State now hosts six universities—three owned by the state, two by the federal government, and one privately owned.

In his remarks, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, said the university will play a vital role in job creation, skill development, and national competitiveness in the engineering and aviation sectors. The governor, represented by his deputy, Patricia Obila, stated that the institution is also designed to diversify the state’s economy and build capacity in emerging technologies, positioning Ebonyi for innovation and global relevance.

The newly approved university is expected to enhance access to specialized education while supporting Nigeria’s broader vision of technological self-reliance.
