Okocha Says He Still Pays Brother For ‘Jay-Jay’ Nickname

Nigerian football icon Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has disclosed that he continues to pay royalties to his brother for the famous nickname that has defined his career, tracing its origins back to their childhood in Enugu.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Super Eagles captain explained that the moniker emerged from his neighbourhood, where numerous boys shared the name Austin, creating confusion among residents trying to distinguish between them.

To solve this problem, Okocha’s friends began calling him “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother,” a reference to his elder brother who already carried the Jay-Jay name. Over time, the tag shortened simply to “Austin Jay-Jay.” While Okocha stopped short of naming which sibling he compensates, his immediate elder brother Emmanuel was widely known by the Jay-Jay name during their youth.

Okocha reminisced about growing up with his brothers on the streets of Enugu, where football served as their primary pastime due to a lack of other recreational options. He recalled that all three siblings played the sport avidly, using the street as their training ground long before organised toys or facilities were available to them.
