Oyo Assembly Approves Makinde’s Leave, Deputy to Act as Governor

The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to embark on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s absence.

Governor Makinde’s leave will begin on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026, while he is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.

The approval came after the House considered a formal letter from the governor during Thursday’s plenary, in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires a governor to notify the state legislature before proceeding on leave or being absent from office.

The letter was read by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the plenary in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.

Following deliberations, members of the Assembly unanimously approved the governor’s request and expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted administration of the state throughout the leave period.

Governor Makinde also proceeded on annual leave around the same period in 2025 and returned before the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on September 26, 2025.
