PDP Convention Approves Nationwide Congresses

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially ratified its ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses across the country.

This followed the adoption of a motion presented by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during the recently concluded 2026 PDP National Convention held in Abuja.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by her media aide, Mike Idoko.

The unanimous endorsement by delegates effectively validates party structures in the affected states and represents a key milestone in the PDP’s internal reorganisation as it prepares for upcoming elections, including the 2027 general polls.

The convention, which drew thousands of party stakeholders, comes after months of consultations, internal disagreements in some state chapters, and reconciliation efforts aimed at strengthening unity within the opposition party.

Observers say the ratification is a strategic move to solidify leadership legitimacy at all levels and reinforce adherence to the party’s constitutional processes.

While presenting the motion, Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted the significance of unity, legality, and institutional stability, describing the exercise as vital to reinforcing the party’s democratic foundation.

“Today’s decision is not merely procedural; it is a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to internal democracy, party discipline, and respect for due process.

“The PDP remains a party governed by rules, consultations, and the will of its members at all levels,” she said.

The motion sought formal approval for congresses conducted in multiple states, in line with resolutions of the National Executive Committee and recommendations of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as compliance with court rulings and provisions of the party’s constitution.

States where congresses were ratified include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Niger, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory.

The convention also sanctioned fresh congresses in Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Enugu, Kano, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

The motion was approved through a voice vote, reflecting broad agreement among delegates and signalling renewed cohesion across different factions of the party.

In her closing remarks, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged party members to prioritise collective goals over personal ambitions as efforts continue to reposition the PDP on the national stage.

“The task before us is bigger than any single person. Together, we must rebuild trust, deepen inclusion, and position the PDP as the credible alternative Nigerians are looking toward,” she added.
