PDP Peace Talks Grow As Leaders Consider Dropping Court Cases

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a major step toward resolving its internal crisis, as leaders from opposing factions begin reconciliation talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

After two days of high-level meetings led by Tanimu Turaki, the party signaled a willingness to prioritise unity even if it means withdrawing ongoing legal battles. At the same time, broader political realignments are unfolding across opposition parties, with fresh strategies and alliances being considered to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Following intense deliberations, Turaki confirmed that PDP leaders are now engaging in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences.

“I can unequivocally confirm that, as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution.

“We urge our supporters across the board to immediately de-escalate high-tempered communications and actions, so as not to jeopardise the ongoing peace efforts.

“To all aspirants who have stood with us thus far, we assure you that, by the grace of God, our party will field candidates for all elective offices, in compliance with Article 6(2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

“In obedience to the advisory of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, a few weeks ago, the parties in the suit should explore reconciliation to save the party from further strife and provide a platform for aspirants to seek elective offices in the coming elections.”

Turaki also disclosed that the party’s Board of Trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara, had set up a high-powered committee to engage aggrieved members and reposition the party.

Despite some resistance and continued tensions, PDP leadership insists peace remains achievable and necessary, especially given the tight timeline before the elections.

A key outcome of the talks is the party’s readiness to abandon ongoing litigation if a political settlement is reached.

“As soon as we reach agreeable terms, which we will honour even in the Court of Appeal, we will willingly withdraw all cases—whether at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, or elsewhere—to give peace a chance.

‘’All cases will give way for peace as soon as we reach that point.”

Turaki emphasised that prolonged legal battles could further damage party unity, adding that reconciliation remains the most practical path forward.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in, urging political tolerance and respect for democratic principles.

‘’So, if you have a pathway to winning the peace without necessarily going to war, why not take peace and forego the war?’’

He warned against internal sabotage within the party:

‘’I am not saying there are no good elements on both sides whose sole intention is to preserve peace in this country. I am saying there are some people fighting so that this party will go down.

‘’From last night, these two elements have been identified and flushed out in the discussions between the two sides.”

Atiku further stressed that democracy thrives on strong opposition and called on those in power to act in the interest of the people.

Meanwhile, within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), key figures are already strategising for 2027.

Media entrepreneur Dele Momodu advised the party to adopt a structured and strategic approach:

“Let us stop promoting this falsehood. There has never been a time when the north did eight years and the south automatically had to do eight years. The constitution does not stop anyone from contesting.”

“If I am to advise ADC, go to the north, where there is crisis and dissatisfaction. Those who worked for Tinubu are angry and feel abandoned. That is where the opportunity lies,” he said.

Momodu also highlighted the importance of political structure, funding, and grassroots coordination in winning elections.

Within ADC, internal debates are intensifying over zoning and candidacy, with pressure mounting on Atiku to step aside for younger contenders.

Potential candidates mentioned include Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Chibuike Amaechi, and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Recent political engagements such as Obi’s meeting with Kwankwaso have sparked renewed speculation about a possible opposition coalition.

According to analysts, a united front among major opposition figures could significantly reshape the political landscape ahead of 2027.

In Osun State, fresh uncertainty has emerged as reports suggest that 18 lawmakers may defect from the Accord platform due to internal instability and leadership disputes.

However, the State House of Assembly dismissed the claims as misleading, insisting there is no crisis within the party.

“The honourable members of the house are members of Accord and not the Accord Party, as erroneously stated in the report,” the statement said.

“It must be stated unequivocally that there is no crisis within the party. The recent publication by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of candidates for the forthcoming gubernatorial election has since put to rest any insinuations of internal instability or leadership uncertainty.”

The PDP’s renewed push for reconciliation signals a critical moment in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the 2027 elections draw closer. With leaders willing to drop court cases and embrace dialogue, the party appears focused on rebuilding unity and restoring its electoral strength.

At the same time, shifting alliances, strategic recalibrations, and growing political tensions across parties highlight an increasingly competitive road to 2027. Whether these peace efforts and coalition talks will translate into a formidable challenge against the ruling party remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: Nigeria’s political landscape is entering a decisive phase.
