Restructuring Nigeria’s Ministry Departments and Agencies

The boards of many agencies were dissolved by President Tinubu on June 19, in the exercise of his constitutional powers. As many chief executives of some federal government departments and agencies ponder if they will keep their jobs.  Is the move to dissolve the leadership of the MDA’s a ploy to allow the president and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to bring their loyalists on board or is it a move for restructuring the Ministry Departments and Agencies.

Numerous Federal cum State Government Agencies and Commissions in Nigeria are earnestly yearning for a holistic review toward ensuring that the respective prime essence of establishing them is duly actualized. Indications emerged that President Bola Tinubu prior to his inauguration would take tough decisions when he assumed duty in order to revive the ailing economy. Undoubtedly, he has made tough decisions, but will he implement the Stephen Oronsaye panel’s report on the reform of the Civil Service which drains the country’s resources?

Recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 set up the presidential committee on restructuring and rationalization of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions, and Agencies under the chairmanship of Oronsaye. The committee submitted an 800-page report on April 16, 2012, in which it uncovered a high level of competition among several overlapping agencies, which not only created ill feelings among government agencies but also brought about unnecessary wastage in expenditure. Surprisingly, this report is yet to be implemented.
