Plotwaver, the African AI company behind Storm OS, has formed a landmark partnership with the University of Lagos through the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies to build the world’s largest professionally curated Yoruba language corpus. The initiative goes beyond artificial intelligence, focusing on language, culture, ownership, and Africa’s role in shaping its own technological future.
As Plotwaver’s CEO Oluwole Fagbohun noted, it represents “more than technology, it is cultural sovereignty,” while UNILAG’s IADS Director, Prof. Ayodele Yusuff, emphasized that African languages will now help shape global AI models. The partnership also opens new economic, educational, and creative opportunities for students, researchers, and creatives, reinforcing the idea that the future of AI can amplify identity, not erase it.
