Singapore Changi Is 2023 World’s Best Airport

There are over 41,700 Airports around the world, with the United States having the most with over 13,000 airports listed.

Airports serve a variety of purposes, including commercial service, cargo service, and general aviation. They are also categorized by their size and number of passengers served.

Along with runways and terminals, airports also include control towers, hangars, taxiways, lounges, food service areas, restaurants, emergency services, security, baggage handling, and more.

An airport is a place from which aircraft operate that usually has paved runways and maintenance facilities and often serves as a terminal.

Airports are the authorized spaces for aircraft takeoff and landing. While some airports are small private and commuter hubs, we generally think of more extensive commercial flight operations when referring to airports.

Larger airports may have airport aprons, taxiway bridges, air traffic control centres, passenger facilities such as restaurants and lounges, and emergency services.

In some countries, the US in particular, airports also typically have one or more fixed-base operators, serving general aviation.

Airports are in 3 Categories:

Nonhub primary – airports handling over 10,000 but less than 0.05% of the country’s annual passenger boardings.

Small hub primary – airports with 0.05–0.25% of the country’s annual passenger boardings.

Medium hub primary – airports handling 0.25–1% of the country’s annual passenger boardings.

Nigeria has 32 airports, 26 of which are operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and five of which are functional international airports. It also has a state-owned airport located in South-south Akwa Ibom State.

Why Is It Called An Airport?

The Word Airport Comes From The Word Aerodrome, Which In Turn Is Derived From Ancient Greek.

‘Aerodrome’ in Ancient Greek translated roughly to ‘air course’. The word aerodrome is still used to describe any areas that carry out flight operation. So, airports are always part of an aerodrome.

Invention of Airports

The history of airports clearly reflects the evolution of transportation and the changing needs of society. From ancient times to today, airports have played a crucial role in facilitating travel and commerce.

The first recorded use of an airport was in 1909, at College Park Airport in Maryland, United States.

This airport was established by the United States Army Signal Corps and was used as a training ground for military pilots.

It became a civilian airport and served as the site of the first scheduled commercial flight in the United States in 1926.

In Nigeria, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is the oldest with operations starting in 1936.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is responsible for the management of all commercial airports in Nigeria.
