A two-day early voting period kicked off Friday ahead of next week’s by-elections for mayors of South Korea’s two largest cities, Seoul and Busan.

Polling stations was open from 6 AM to 6 PM under strict virus prevention measures and will be open again during those hours on Saturday at 722 polling stations in Seoul, Busan and other regions taking part in the by-elections.

Some 8.4 million eligible voters in Seoul and about 2.9 million in Busan will pick their new mayors that will serve until next April.

Besides the two mayoral seats, two regional administrative posts and 17 seats on regional legislative councils are also up for grabs.

President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jung-sook cast their ballots for Seoul mayor this morning at a polling station near the presidential compound.

This is the second election to take place during the pandemic here in South Korea.
