Tansian University VC Dies Hours After Swearing-In

The Tansian University VC, Professor Nnamdi Dike Umeoduagu, has died hours after being formally inaugurated as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution in Umunya, Anambra State.

Umeoduagu was inaugurated on Friday, October 2, 2026, and died the following day, Saturday, October 3, according to information confirmed by the university.

Tansian University’s Chief Press Secretary, Fidelis Nwakwesili, confirmed the death to PREMIUM TIMES, saying the professor had been sworn in as substantive Vice-Chancellor on Friday before his sudden death on Saturday.

The cause of his death has not been publicly established.

Tansian University VC Had Served in Acting Capacity

Although Umeoduagu had only just been inaugurated as substantive Vice-Chancellor, Tansian University has clarified that he was not new to the position.

The university said he had already served as acting Vice-Chancellor for approximately two months after the previous substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eugene Nwadialor, proceeded on medical leave.

Umeoduagu continued in the acting role until the expiration of Nwadialor’s tenure on September 30, before his formal inauguration as substantive Vice-Chancellor on October 2.

Tansian University VC before his death in Anambra
Umeoduagu had served as acting Vice-Chancellor for about two months before his formal inauguration.

The clarification followed reports suggesting that the late Tansian University VC had only been in charge of the institution for a few days.

University officials said that portrayal did not accurately reflect the period he had already spent leading the institution in an acting capacity.

What Is Known About His Death?

Details surrounding Umeoduagu’s sudden death remain limited.

The university said it would support his family’s desire for an autopsy to help establish the cause of death.

This means claims about what caused the professor’s death remain unconfirmed, and no medical cause should be attributed to him until findings are officially released.

His death came shortly after what should have marked a new phase in his academic career.

Who Was Professor Nnamdi Umeoduagu?

Umeoduagu was a professor of Microbiology and had previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Tansian University.

He was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata I Constituency.

Before his formal appointment as substantive Vice-Chancellor, he had already been involved in the university’s academic and administrative leadership.

The institution described him as a committed scholar and administrator who contributed to strengthening its academic programmes and institutional development.

University Mourns Tansian University VC

The sudden death of the Tansian University VC has thrown the institution into mourning just as he was beginning his substantive tenure.

University management described Umeoduagu’s death as a major loss to his family, colleagues, students and the wider academic community.

The institution has also urged the public to avoid speculation about the circumstances surrounding his death while awaiting further information.

For now, the most significant unanswered question remains the cause of Umeoduagu’s sudden death.

Any definitive conclusion will depend on official medical findings and further information released by his family or Tansian University.
