Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar praised the exceptional patience, endurance, and resilience of Nigerians, noting that despite the harsh socio-economic and security realities, they have continued to keep the nation united.
In a statement issued by his media office on Independence Day, Atiku expressed concern that citizens were suffering severe hardship from worsening insecurity and food shortages to widespread unemployment and a growing atmosphere of despair all made worse by what he described as the indifference of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
Atiku said in the message, “It is tragic,” Atiku declared, saying, “In a country blessed with immense human and material resources, millions of our people have been reduced to refugees and beggars in their fatherland.
“Every responsible government holds the welfare and security of its citizens as supreme. But what we have today is an administration that has abandoned its people.
“Hunger is killing Nigerians, bandits are massacring communities, yet President Tinubu and his cabinet stand by, unmoved and uncaring.”
Encouraging Nigerians not to give up, Atiku stressed that the 2027 elections offered a vital chance to reject failed leadership and restore hope for a better future.
He stated, “The beauty of democracy lies in the power of the ballot. Oppressed and battered as our people may feel today, they will have the chance to sweep away this inept government at the next polls. That is the power no cabal can take away from the people.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 65 years of independence, Atiku described the country as a giant making painfully slow progress, weighed down by decades of misrule and wasteful governance.
He urged citizens to remain hopeful, affirming that with the right leadership, Nigeria can rise above the failures of the past and reclaim its rightful position among the nations of the world.
