The New Nigerian Lifestyle: When Convenience Changes How We Live

From the way we eat and work to how we travel, socialise and spend our free time, convenience has become an important part of everyday life.

Food can arrive at our doorstep. Meetings can happen from our phones. Ride-hailing can take us almost anywhere. Entertainment is available at the touch of a screen.

But as life becomes more convenient, are some of us becoming less active, eating differently and spending less time resting?

Experts identify unhealthy diets and insufficient physical activity among major modifiable risk factors for noncommunicable diseases. It also notes that urbanisation and changing lifestyles are influencing food and activity patterns.

This doesn’t mean that convenience is necessarily unhealthy.

The bigger question is balance.

Can we enjoy convenient meals while still making nutritious choices? Can we use cars and ride-hailing while finding opportunities to walk? Can we stay connected without being permanently glued to our screens? Can we work hard without making rest an afterthought?
