Three people have died after being suffocated in massive crowds celebrating Mexico’s World Cup victory over Ecuador in Mexico City, authorities said.
The fatalities occurred near the Angel of Independence monument, where thousands of fans gathered following Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador in the Round of 32.
Emergency responders attended to three unconscious people at different locations along Paseo de la Reforma, the city’s main boulevard, which had been closed to traffic for the celebrations.
Health officials confirmed the deaths of a 44-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, and later a 48-year-old woman, all of whom died from asphyxiation despite emergency medical efforts. The third victim died after being taken to hospital.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged the public to celebrate responsibly.
The celebrations erupted after Mexico secured its first World Cup knockout-stage victory in 40 years at the Azteca Stadium, advancing to the Round of 16 with the win over Ecuador.
While thousands of supporters filled the streets in celebration, videos shared on social media showed emergency personnel treating distressed fans as the overcrowded conditions unfolded.
Mexico City’s metropolitan area, home to more than 20 million people, is one of the world’s largest urban centres and is accustomed to hosting major public gatherings.
