President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri following a fresh wave of deadly attacks that left dozens dead and more than 100 others injured.
The directive comes in the wake of coordinated bombings reportedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, which struck parts of Borno State on Monday evening.
Reacting to the development ahead of his official trip to the United Kingdom, the president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and reaffirmed his administration’s determination to defeat terrorism.
“The recent news from Maiduguri, Borno State, is profoundly upsetting. I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno during this challenging time.”
Tinubu described the attacks as signs of a weakening insurgency, insisting that the perpetrators were acting out of desperation.
“I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies operating in various theatres.”
He assured Nigerians that military operations against insurgents would be intensified across the country.
“We will continue to intensify our efforts against all criminal elements, wherever they may be.”
The president also praised security forces for successfully repelling parts of the coordinated assault.
“I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state.”
Describing the incident further, Tinubu said: “The Monday attacks were desperate acts of the evil-minded terrorist groups. Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down.”
He revealed that additional measures were already being implemented to strengthen security operations nationwide.
“Just last weekend, during a security meeting with leaders of security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities. This effort is already in progress.”
Announcing immediate steps to contain the situation, the president stated: “Additionally, I have directed security chiefs to move to Maiduguri to take charge of the situation. I have also directed the emergency agencies to provide proper care for the injured.”
Reiterating his administration’s stance, Tinubu declared that terrorism would not be allowed to thrive anywhere in the country.
“There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them. Nigeria will not succumb to fear.”
