At the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund launch in Abuja on Tuesday, the Federal Government contributed N500 million to support the Nigerian Legion. The National Assembly followed with a N200 million donation, while the Chief of Defence Staff and Inspector-General of Police collectively contributed N50 million on behalf of the military and police.
During the ceremony, President Bola Tinubu praised the Armed Forces for their dedication to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. Highlighting the essential role of security in national stability, Tinubu emphasized, “Regardless of economic theories we propose, without security, peace and development cannot flourish.”
President Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Nigeria’s military personnel and honoring those who have sacrificed their lives to defend the nation. “Today, we remember our fallen heroes who sacrificed for Nigeria’s unity, stability, and progress. Their values, principles, and beliefs inspire us to pass on an unblemished legacy to future generations,” he said.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced the contributions, and Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, later issued a statement summarizing the day’s highlights. Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s support for the welfare of active and retired armed forces members and their families. He emphasized the significance of the Appeal Fund, stating that funds raised would bolster essential services, including healthcare, education, and financial assistance for veterans and their families.
Maj. Gen. Abdulmalik Jibril (retd.), national chairman of the Nigerian Legion, commended the President’s support, noting that the funds would ensure a dignified life for veterans and their families. The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, Federal Executive Council members, service chiefs, security agency heads, and Nigerian Legion representatives.
