Former US president Donald Trump has said he will ask the judge in his alleged election fraud case to step aside on what he described as very powerful grounds.
Trump took to his social media platform, truth social, on Sunday morning, describing the case as ridiculous freedom of speech/fair elections case, saying that his legal team would immediately be asking for the recusal of the judge.
His call came after the prosecution requested a court order that would limit what he can publicly say about the case.
Posting on the Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump wrote: “There is no way I can get a fair trial with the judge assigned.”
He added he would seek US District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s recusal as well as a change of venue outside of Washington.
Prosecutors say they feared the former president might intimidate witnesses after another social media post which they described as threatening, leading them to file for a protective order.
The filing asked Judge Chutkan to issue a protective order prohibiting Trump and his lawyers from sharing any discovery materials with unauthorized people.
