The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has organised a workshop to build teachers capacity on Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE)and jolly phonics program for Nigerian teachers.
The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, while explaining that SMASE and Jolly Phonics have been implemented over ten years in the UBE programme, noted that the program has helped in strengthening the study of science and mathematics in basic education.
The E.S who was represented by a Director in the commission, Prof. Bala Zakari, said that UBEC has continuously injected the Teachers Professional Development (TPD) fund into the training of teachers in order to build teachers capacity in SMASE.
In his remarks, the Director, Teachers Development in the commission, Aleshin Olumayowa, disclosed that SMASE is used to train teachers on how to improvise and help learners in learning science and mathematics.
He added that the program helps teachers in teaching the subjects effectively, as well as enhance assimilation by learners.
It could be recalled that jolly phonics is a flagship reading program of the Universal Basic Education Commission.
