‎UniAbuja Expulsion: How To Authenticate O’ Level Results For University Admissions

The Senate of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, UniAbuja, has expelled several students and withdrawn the certificates of a number of former students after serious disciplinary violations were uncovered by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

The resolutions were confirmed during the institution’s 191st regular Senate meeting held on January 28, 2026, at its main campus in Abuja.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the university reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct that compromises academic integrity and campus security.

The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, described academic integrity as “sacrosanct” and reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to producing responsible citizens through firm rule enforcement, strengthened counselling services, and orientation programmes.

The development has drawn renewed attention to a lingering issue in Nigerian tertiary admissions, namely the falsification of O’ Level results issued by WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB and uploaded directly onto university portals.

Education experts and stakeholders maintain that stringent authentication mechanisms are now critical to curb such fraudulent practices.

‎Number of students expelled

The Senate approved the immediate expulsion of 28 currently enrolled students. Additionally, it revoked certificates previously awarded to 15 former students who repeatedly failed to honour invitations to appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee.

Nine students were completely cleared of any wrongdoing after investigations, while 33 others received formal warnings over lesser offences including conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.

‎Reasons for the expulsion

The affected students were found guilty of cult-related activities, threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary and theft, possession and use of hard drugs, and falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university’s admission portal.

The 15 alumni whose certificates were withdrawn had declined repeated invitations from the disciplinary panel.

The university stated that each decision was reached after a comprehensive review of the cases by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

Falsification of O’ Level results was particularly identified as a major trigger for expulsion, with some students allegedly submitting forged or manipulated WAEC or NECO statements of results during the admission process, a trend facilitated by online portals but now increasingly detected through rigorous cross-verification.

‎How to authenticate O’Level results for university admissions

To prevent disqualification, expulsion, or certificate revocation, candidates and institutions are required to adhere strictly to official verification procedures.

Nigerian universities, including Yakubu Gowon University, now validate results uploaded to their portals against centralised databases and the records of the issuing examination bodies.

Below is the current and reliable process as of 2026:

‎Mandatory Upload on JAMB Portal (First and Most Important Step)

All admission seekers must upload their authentic O’ Level results, whether from WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB, to the JAMB e-Facility or CAPS portal.

Candidates should visit https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/ or proceed to any JAMB-accredited CBT centre with their original result slip and JAMB profile.

Log in using your JAMB registration number or email and password.

Select “Access My CAPS” and then “My O’Level” to upload or confirm your result.

JAMB now mandates verification of uploaded results before admission processing, enabling institutions to view and authenticate credentials directly through CAPS.

Failure to upload or verify results on JAMB automatically disqualifies a candidate from admission consideration, even where cut-off requirements have been met.

‎WAEC Result Verification (WASSCE/SSCE)

For individuals and candidates, the official WAEC Results Verification Portal can be accessed at https://verify.waeconline.org.ng/.

A verification PIN, costing approximately ₦3,500 and valid for one year with up to five uses for the same examination number, must be purchased. After entering the required examination details and PIN, an instant verification report is generated.

For holders of results from 1999 to the present, the Digital Certificate option is recommended. Candidates may create an account at https://www.waec.org/, access their digital certificate, fund their wallet, and share it directly with the university’s admission email.

Institutions receive the certificate through a secure encrypted link and can authenticate it at no cost.

For universities and institutions, bulk verification services are available at discounted rates, which may be as low as ₦2,500 per result for large volumes. Institutional accounts can be requested via waecverify@waec.org.ng.

‎NECO Result Verification (SSCE)

Candidates should visit the official NECO e-Verify portal at https://everify.neco.gov.ng/.

Individuals are required to sign in or create an account, purchase a verification token through Remita, and generate a verification report.

Institutions may open an institutional account for single, bulk, or API-integrated verification. Candidates can purchase a token and provide the Remita Retrieval Reference to the university.

The process generates an official verification report accepted by all Nigerian universities.

‎Additional Best Practices to Prevent Falsification

Candidates should never rely solely on photocopies or self-scanned results uploaded to university portals but must present original certificates or official online verification.

Universities frequently request direct confirmation from WAEC or NECO in cases considered borderline or suspicious.

Applicants who register with “awaiting result” status during JAMB registration should promptly upload their results once released and reconfirm their status on CAPS.

Examination numbers, years, and scratch card or PIN details should be kept secure at all times.

Prof. Fawehinmi urged students and prospective applicants to “conduct themselves responsibly” and refrain from actions capable of jeopardising their future.

“Our goal is not only to enforce discipline but also to guide our students towards responsible citizenship and academic excellence,” he stated.

Amid increasing instances of result forgery across Nigerian universities, experts advise all admission seekers to treat authentication as compulsory.

Adhering strictly to official JAMB, WAEC, and NECO verification channels remains the only assured path to securing legitimate admission and avoiding the fate of the 28 expelled students at Yakubu Gowon University.
