US And Ecuador Launch Joint Operations To Combat Drug Trafficking

The United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) says US and Ecuador military forces have launched joint operations against suspected drug-trafficking groups labelled as “designated terrorist organizations” in Ecuador. The coordinated effort aims to confront narco-terrorism and stem the flow of illegal drugs through the region.

Announced on March 3, the operations mark a new phase of cooperation that reflects both countries’ commitment to tackling drug networks that have long fuelled violence, corruption and organised crime throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

SOUTHCOM released a statement saying, “Together, we are taking decisive action to confront narco-terrorists who have long inflicted terror, violence, and corruption on citizens throughout the hemisphere.”

Ecuador’s Defence Ministry described the activity as part of an “offensive” counter-narcotics campaign, though it did not disclose detailed operational specifics, calling such information classified. The announcement follows earlier statements by President Daniel Noboa that Ecuador would begin joint operations with regional allies, including the United States, to weaken drug cartels that use the country’s ports as key trafficking hubs.

The collaboration also underscores broader regional security efforts, with both nations planning enhanced information-sharing and operational coordination at airports and seaports to disrupt the production and transit of illicit drugs. Analysts say Ecuador’s strategic location near major cocaine producers makes it a focal point in the broader fight against organised drug crime.
