Two former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students have joined an elite group of mathematicians after receiving the prestigious 2026 Fields Medal, one of the highest honours in mathematics. Yu Deng and Hong Wang, both MIT alumni, were announced as recipients of the award during the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) alongside mathematicians John Pardon and Jacob Tsimerman.

Yu Deng
Yu Deng graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2011.
He received the Fields Medal for groundbreaking work in partial differential equations, including:
The rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from hard-sphere dynamics for rarefied gases
The derivation of wave kinetic equations from nonlinear dispersive systems
Probabilistic approaches to nonlinear Schrödinger dynamics
His first published research paper originated from undergraduate summer research conducted at MIT.
Today, Deng serves as a professor at the University of Chicago.
Hong Wang
Hong Wang earned her PhD from MIT in 2019 under the supervision of Larry Guth.
