Former World No.1 Rafael Nadal has suffered a ‘seven-millimetre’ tear to his abdomen. Nadal defied injury to outclass Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday. Nadal will meet Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam event on Friday.
Former World No.1 Rafael Nadal is in a race against time as the Spaniard has suffered an abdominal injury ahead of his semi-final meeting with Australia’s Nick Kygrious at the Wimbledon Championships. Nicknamed the King of Clay, the record-time French Open winner had to battle an abdominal injury in his epic five-set thriller against 11th-seeded American Taylor FRITZ at Wimbledon 2022 on Wednesday. Nadal defeated Fritz to enter his eighth semi-final of the prestigious Grand Slam event at the All England Club.
Nadal, who won the Wimbledon title in the 2008 and 2010 editions, took a medical time-out in the second set during his quarter-final clash with Fritz at the Centre Court. Overcoming the abdominal pain and making adjustments in his style of play, Nadal managed to find a way to upstage Fritz in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam event. Nadal defeated the American 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4) to reach another semifinal at the All England Club.
According to a report filed by Marca, Nadal has suffered a “seven millimetre” tear to his abdomen. However, Nadal is expected to play in the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships. Nadal will meet Kyrgios in the penultimate clash of the Grand Slam event on Friday. Nadal also suffered a two-centimetre tear during the 2009 edition of the US Open. Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro had crushed an injured Nadal in straight sets at the time.
