Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, received a lavish welcome upon their arrival in Pyongyang, where thousands gathered to celebrate the longstanding relationship between China and North Korea.
According to Chinese state media outlet Xinhua, the couple arrived by car at Kim Il Sung Square, where a military band and what was described as a “jubilant crowd” awaited them.
They were welcomed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. The square was decorated with banners carrying messages such as “Eternal Friendship between North Korea and China” and “Long Live the Unbreakable Friendship and Unity between North Korea and China.”
As part of the ceremony, Xi inspected a guard of honour from the Korean People’s Army, the elite ceremonial unit of North Korea’s armed forces.
During the inspection, members of the unit reportedly shouted in Korean, “Wishing Comrade Xi Jinping good health.”
Images from the event showed portraits of Xi and Kim prominently displayed around the square, underscoring the significance of the visit and the close diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring nations.
Footage released by Xinhua captured enthusiastic scenes from the ceremony, with children cheering excitedly while crowds waved Chinese and North Korean flags and held flower bouquets in celebration of the occasion.
The grand reception highlighted the enduring relationship between China and North Korea, as both countries continue to emphasise their longstanding political and strategic partnership.
