Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has officially entered the race for the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor obtained his nomination form on Thursday in Abuja shortly after attending his first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting as a member of the APM.
The meeting was chaired by the party’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, alongside other senior party officials and stakeholders.
Addressing members during the gathering, Governor Mohammed criticised what he described as undemocratic practices and political intimidation within Nigeria’s political environment, saying such actions have made it difficult for progressive politicians and political movements to thrive.
He explained that the APM’s principles align closely with his political ideology, especially in areas such as good governance, internal democracy, justice, inclusiveness, and adherence to the rule of law. According to the governor, these shared values influenced his decision to join the party.
The governor also revealed that several prominent figures from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) moved with him to the APM. He listed members of the National Assembly, lawmakers from the Bauchi State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, commissioners, ward executives, party leaders, and numerous grassroots supporters among those who joined the new political movement.
According to Mohammed, the development should not be viewed as an individual defection but as a broader political movement designed to strengthen the APM and widen its national influence.
His decision to contest for the Senate seat comes just days after his departure from the PDP, where he cited the need to provide better representation for his constituents.
Before leaving the PDP, Mohammed served as chairman of the party’s Governors’ Forum.
Governor Mohammed previously represented the Bauchi South Senatorial District in the Senate after winning the seat in 2007 under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
He was later appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2010 before eventually joining the People’s Democratic Party.
