“At last year’s race we noticed some darkness at the starting point which obstructed some of the opening formalitites such that we have to delay the flag off for some

minutes.

1

The Nationwide League One (NLO) Secretariat has stressed that the home grounds of clubs in Division One must meet the requirements specified for it to get approval for the 2023 season.

In a statement issued by its media department yesterday, the NLO informed that the stadium inspection for all Division One clubs will be for eight days and will commence from Friday 13th to 20th February 2023

The State Football Associations and all the concerned clubs have also been kindly informed that the under-listed conditions must be met since 70% of its matches will be live-streamed via the NLO TV Channel.

Such facilities must have a decent and functional dressing room for players and officials.

Stadium proposed by the club must have a stand for the home team/away teams, spectators and a scoreboard which could be manual or electronic.

The playing turf pitch in the sports facilities must be good and well-marked, with a good goal post net and corner flags.

2023 UTME: CBT Operators Raise Concerns Over Reduced Centers

0

The Association of Tutorial School Operators (ASTO) has said the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates will experience pain and stress.

This was in reaction to the reduction in the number of computer-based centres across the country by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Isaq Oloyede, announced the reduction when he met with commissioners for education across the country on Monday in Ikeja, Lagos.

It was gathered that JAMB reduced the centres for reasons such as poor facilities, not complying with the guidelines of the Board, and involvement in examination malpractice among others.

Though the total number of CBT centres axed by the board was not given, investigations revealed that in Ogun State, the number of CBT centres was reduced from 43 to 21, in Aba State, the number was reduced from 21 to 14 and in Kogi State, it was reduced from 17 to 16.

The ASTO National President, Dotun Sodunke, explained that though it was a good step to curb substandard CBT centres in the country, he, however, added that the few available centres would not be enough for the candidates to conveniently sit 2023 UTME.

He said, “The CBT reduction will make candidates pass through a lot of rigours to sit the exam. I can’t imagine the stress and risks the students will experience. Some of the may be taken to far away CBT centres due to the reduction. A candidate in Surulere may be taken to Badagry. By the time the candidates go through the high cost of transportation, travel long distances, and sleep in hotels to sit the exam, some will get kidnapped, raped and a lot will fail and we won’t get the best into our universities. It is not worth it.”

He suggested that JAMB should build mega senatorial CBT centres of 5,000 capacities that would accommodate more UTME candidates.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education in Kogi State, Wemi Jones, said, “This is the first time I am attending a meeting like this and a lot of issues have been cleared. Regarding the reduction in the CBT centres, we would find out what happened and tidy up any loose ends. The size of Kogi State requires that we even have more centres not that the number be reduced.”

The Commissioner for Education in Ogun State, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, commended the Board for the meeting.

“This is a novel idea, I mean meeting with commissioners for education and carrying them along. As a Vice Chancellor, I was part of meetings regarding preparations for the UTME. But this is the first time a meeting of this kind is holding. You know the practice in the past is that examination bodies would just conduct exams without letting the state authorities know what is happening.”

2023 UTME: JAMB Assures Hitch-free Registration, Exams

2

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured admission seekers of a hitch-free 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The board has just concluded plans to begin the admission process on February 14.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, gave the assurance while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of a meeting with Commissioners of Education of the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday in Lagos.

Oloyede said the board had put machinery in place to tackle most of the challenges recorded during the conduct of the past examinations.

“Today’s meeting is to brief the commissioners on our level of preparedness for the upcoming examination and to seek their kind support, as critical stakeholders, to ensure that the exercise is a huge success.

“Recall that this meeting is usually held every examination year with the commissioners to brief them on what we are doing as it concerns the entire examination process, making it inclusive, robust and interactive, as much as we can.

“Again, we disclosed to the commissioners how their states are faring, especially to encourage them in our appeal for collaboration for the establishment of world-class Computer Based Test (CBT) centres nationwide.

“We showed them the result of the 2023 centre accreditation for the conduct of the examination nationwide, which proved that just a total of 600 centres have been approved, out of the over 800 that applied,” he said.

According to him, the approved figure is 140 less than the total number used for the same exercise in 2022.

Oloyede noted that the implication of this was that there would be a sharp drop in the number of personnel that would be engaged for the entire examination process.

“If you calculate the 10 workers being used per centre, you will understand the magnitude of what I have just explained,” he said.

The JAMB boss said the commissioners had appealed that they would be glad to see the inadequacies of the centres, particularly the public ones, to see if they could intervene.

He said the commissioners had also been asked to join hands with the board in the fight against examination malpractice.

Also, JAMB’s Director of Media and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, assured all stakeholders that there would be no clash between the board’s examination and the forthcoming election.

“Like we all know, it is an election year. But we have lined up our activities in such a way that it will not be affected by the elections.

“So, I want to seize this opportunity too to tell prospective candidates and members of the public generally that there will be no clash.

“The commission, whose job it is to conduct the elections, has the capacity, just like the board, to carry out their separate functions effectively without one disturbing the other,” he said.

Some of the commissioners told NAN that the initiative was a welcome development, adding that it was fruitful.

Prince Harry’s Memoir Goes On Sale

1

After months of anticipation and a blanket publicity blitz, Prince Harry’s autobiography “Spare” went on sale Tuesday as royal insiders hit back at his scorching revelations.

The royal family led by King Charles III and his heir, Harry’s elder brother William, have maintained a studied silence as painful details from the book and a round of pre-publication TV interviews have piled up.

But palace insiders quoted in the UK press said the Duke of Sussex had crossed a line in attacking Queen Consort Camilla, Charles’s second wife following the death of Princess Diana, William and Harry’s mother.

The book opens with an epigraph drawn from US author William Faulkner — which Harry writes he found on the website BrainyQuote.com.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past,” it says, setting the stage for 416 pages of ghost-written prose dominated by Harry’s trauma over Diana’s death, score-settling with his family and hatred of the British media.

The contents of the memoir, which will be available in 16 languages as well as the audiobook, have already been widely leaked after copies mistakenly went on sale early in Spain.

$1.9bn Expansion Project Launched At Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port

0

The Saudi Ports Authority, also known as Mawani, on Tuesday, launched a  project worth SR7 billion ($1.9 billion) to upgrade and develop two container terminals at the King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.

The project has been awarded to the Saudi Global Ports on a build-operate-transfer basis. Mawani President Omar Hariri, SGP Chairman Abdullah Al-Zamil, and several senior officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

The project seeks to take the national maritime regulator a step closer to realizing its Saudi Vision 2030-inspired roadmap centered around optimizing port operations and modernizing infrastructure to build a booming and sustainable ecosystem.

It will also help the authority achieve the goals set by the National Transport and Logistics Strategy to position the Kingdom as a global logistics destination connecting three continents.

The concession will work on refurbishing berths and facilities across the port’s first container terminal, expand berths and overhaul the container yard within the second container terminal to enable the Arabian Gulf hub to handle giant containerships.

The development works will also add a custom-built sandbox to test cutting-edge technologies and conceptualize new processes before going online.

Apart from generating over 4,000 jobs, the project will raise the port’s overall capacity by 120 percent to 7.5 million TEUs.
