The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed dates for prospective voters to collect their permanent voter cards (PVC).

In a statement on Friday, INEC’s national commissioner and chairman, information and voter education committee, Festus Okoye, said the commission met on Thursday and deliberated on a number of issues, including the dates for PVC collection.

Okoye said the commission has fixed December 12, 2022 to January 22, 2023 as the dates for the collection of the PVCs in all the 774 LGAs.

He added that all valid registrants can collect their PVCs from 9am to 3pm daily including Saturdays and Sundays.

“The Commission also resolved to devolve PVC collection to the 8,809 Registration Areas/Wards from Friday 6th to Sunday 15th January 2023,” the statement reads.

“Those that are unable to collect their PVCs at the Local Government Offices of the Commission can do so at the Registration Areas/Electoral Wards. After the 15th of January 2023, the exercise will revert to the Local Government Offices of the Commission until 22nd January 2023.

“All the Resident Electoral Commissioner (RECs )and Electoral Officers (EOs) have been directed to convene a meeting with the critical stakeholders in their States and Local Government Areas, including traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups, community-based organisations and the media to brief them on the modalities for the collection of the PVCs in order to sensitise the public and ensure seamless exercise.

“Similarly, RECs and EOs have also been directed to set up help desks to assist registrants with complaints about their PVCs or with the PVC collection procedure for immediate redress.

“The Commission appreciates the patience and understanding of Nigerians, especially those who registered as voters or applied for transfer/replacement of their cards from January to July 2022. In making the cards available for collection, the Commission is also working to ensure that the process is simple and hitch-free for Nigerians.”

The Nigeria First Lady, Aisha Buhari has withdrawn case against a final year student of the Federal University, Dutse, Aminu Adamu.

24-year-old Adamu, was arrested by the police in Dutse for allegedly publishing a defamatory statement on his Twitter handle against Mrs Buhari.

In the alleged offensive tweet, Adamu, who is studying Environmental Management, posted a rotund picture of the first lady with a caption in Hausa saying, “Mama is feeding fat on poor people’s money.”

The tweet was posted on June 8, 2022. After nearly two weeks in detention and alleged torture, he was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State.

But withdrawing the case against the accused on Friday, the prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe said the First Lady as the mother of the nation decided to withdraw the case, following the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians.

He relied on Section 108 subsection 2(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to move the application for the withdrawal of the case.

Ruling on the matter, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the FCT High Court commended Mrs Buhari for taking the “bold steps” to forgive the accused.

He called on parents to always monitor their children to avoid recurrence.

Russia Rejects Pullout From Ukraine As Condition For Talks

Russia said Friday that Western demands it should pull out completely from Ukraine as part of any future talks to end the war effectively rule out any such negotiations, as Russian strikes continued and a Ukrainian official set his country’s battle losses at up to 13,000 troops.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to talks but the Western demand that Moscow first withdraws its troops from Ukraine is unacceptable.

Peskov’s comments came as Putin spoke on the phone Friday morning with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Scholz’s office said he made clear to Putin “that there must be a diplomatic solution as quickly as possible, which includes a withdrawal of Russian troops.”

On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden also indicated he would be willing to talk with Putin if he demonstrated that he seriously wanted to end the invasion and pull out of Ukraine.

A statement issued by the Kremlin after the phone call with Scholz said Putin again blamed the West for encouraging Ukraine to prolong the war by supplying it with weapons.

Putin also said recent crippling Russian strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure were “forced and inevitable” after Ukraine allegedly bombed a key bridge to the Crimean peninsula — which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014 — and energy facilities.

Rail Strike Averted As Biden Signs Bill Enforcing Agreement

0

U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill Friday to avert a freight rail strike that he said could have plunged the U.S. into a catastrophic recession.

At the White House, Biden signed a measure passed Thursday by the Senate and Wednesday by the House.

It binds rail companies and workers to a proposed settlement that was reached between the railroads and union leaders in September but rejected by some of the union workers.

The president, for decades a vocal labor ally, called it the “right thing to do” given the risks to an economy that is battling high inflation.

“The bill I’m about to sign ends a difficult rail dispute and helps our nation avoid what without a doubt would have been an economic catastrophe at a very bad time in the calendar,” said Biden, adding that his team helped negotiate a “good product, but we still have more work to do in my view.”

Members in four of the 12 unions involved had rejected the proposed contract as lacking sufficient paid sick leave. Biden acknowledged the shortcoming as he said he would continue to push for that benefit for every U.S. worker.

“I’ve supported paid sick leave for a long time,” he said. “I’m going to continue that fight until we succeed.”

UK Oil Refinery To Build £360m Carbon Capture Plant

1

A multimillion-pound carbon capture plant is to be built at an oil refinery in Cheshire.

Essar Oil UK will build the £360m site at Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port to help reduce carbon emissions.

The company said it would also invest in a range of efficiencies to “decarbonise its production process”.

A statement said Essar’s “energy transition strategy” was based on the development of more environmentally friendly fuels.

The firm will also seek to establish the UK’s largest biofuels storage facility at the site, it said.

The government has a net zero target by 2050.

Japanese Carmaker Signs £11.3m Deal To Develop Hydrogen Pickup Trucks

2

Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer Toyota, has signed an £11.3m deal to help it develop a new range of hydrogen-powered pickup trucks.

The agreement could create up to 250 jobs across the UK, according to the government.

The funding will allow Toyota to set up a pilot production line for its Hilux FC model at its plant near Derby.

Research carried out there could eventually pave the way for trucks to be built at the company’s Deeside factory in Wales.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is investing £5.6m in the research scheme, based at Burnaston, with a further £5.7m coming through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) – an industry body which supports work to decarbonise transport.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles do not use electricity stored in a battery but generates it through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

The government said that hydrogen vehicles were better suited to isolated settings like farms and quarries, where pickup trucks are already commonly used, and the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging is impractical.

Exploring Curzon Hall, Bangladesh

2

Curzon Hall is a building originating from the British Raj-era, and today home of the Faculty of Science at the University of Dhaka, located in the capital city of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

With its extremely fascinating history, at first was intended to be a town hall, which was named after the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, who as a matter in fact laid the foundation stone in 1904.

After the establishment of Dacca University in 1921, it became an important ground for major events in the country.

After the partition of India in 1947, Urdu was declared as a sole state language, however, the majority of the population then were speaking Bangla.

The students at the University of Dhaka, objected instantly, and Curzon Hall was the place where they declared their opposition to the state language policy.

Nonetheless, the vastness of the whole area of Curzon Hall is imperceivable from outside.

Several playing fields, flowerbeds and a big pond inside it, make it a rare site in present Dhaka city, which is even more unique because it is made out of red bricks.

When examining the structure of the Curzon Hall, it is easy to see why most believe it is one of the prime examples of architecture in the city.

It is a unique combination of Mughal and European designing styles and the traditional artistry of the time was made to blend exquisitely with the modern features.

Visitors to Curzon Hall will therefore be able to view magnificent domes, stunning horse-show arches and cusped arches.

It also features beautiful pavilions and breathtaking eaves. Simply said, this is one of the most impressive, most beautiful building that Bangladesh can offer to every person visiting the country.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has said the AIDS-related deaths in the country have declined from 264,463 in 2015 to about 51,000 in 2022.

Mustapha said this at an event in Abuja in commemoration of the 2022 World AIDS Day with the theme: ‘Equalize to End AIDS: Equal access to Treatment and Prevention services.’

The World AIDS Day is celebrated every December 1 annually to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories, such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.

The SGF said “Since this administration commenced in 2015, I am happy to note that our ongoing efforts to improve access to HIV services have led to a significant reduction in new HIV infections from over 103,000 in 2019 to 92,323 in 2021. In a similar vein, AIDS-related deaths significantly declined from an estimated 264,463 persons at the beginning of this administration to about 51,000 as of October this year.

Boss Mustapha

“Treatment access experienced tremendous improvement since this administration came on board and we can gladly proclaim that access to Anti-Retro Viral Drugs and treatment for HIV has increased more than two-fold in the past five years with about 1.8 million persons now on treatment compared to about 800,000 persons on treatment in 2017.

In his welcome address, the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr. Gambo Aliyu said Nigeria is focused on achieving epidemic control with about 90 per cent of PLHIV already identified and currently on treatment.

Gambo said “We have recorded significant growth in key population treatment sites from 10 in 2017 providing treatment to about 16,000 PLHIV to 118 sites in 2021 with coverage of over 220,000.

“Kindly recall that President Muhammadu Buhari launched the N62 Billion HIV Trust Fund of Nigeria in February this year. Today, we shall witness the launch of the online donation portal of the Fund to ensure no one is left behind in our collective effort to end AIDS by 2030.

“Similarly, in line with alignment 2.0, HIV prevention and treatment is shifting ownership to States and today we shall witness the signing of the sustainability agreement for Taraba and Abia States.”

Nigeria Approves Mother Tongue as Compulsory Language in Schools

0

The federal government has approved a new National Language Policy which makes mother tongue a compulsory medium of instruction for public primary school pupils.

Making this disclosure Wednesday was the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, while briefing reporters on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

While explaining that government is aware that its implementation will be difficult, the minister revealed that the mother tongue will be used exclusively for the first six years of education, while it will be combined with English Language from Junior Secondary School.

According to him, even though the policy has officially taken effect, it can only be fully implemented when government develops instructional materials and qualified teachers are available.

Adamu explained that the mother tongue to be used in each school will be the dominant language spoken by the community where it is located.

The minister said government is prepared to preserve cultures and their peculiar idiosyncrasies, stressing that so much has been lost due to the extinction of some local language.

He assured Nigerians that all Nigerian languages, which he said are over 600, are equal and will be treated as such.

However, The minister said the decision is only in principle for now because it will require a lot of work to implement it.
