Located in Iyin-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun LGA, Esa cave is capable of containing about thirty four thousand people at a time and it is believed to have shielded the people of the town during the internecine wars in Yoruba land.
This is a great site to explore the rich Yoruba history.
Esa Cave is beside a mountain that is about 10,000 feet above the sea level.
The original owners of the cave are the Ijoro family of Okesale area of Iyin Ekiti.
The Cave was manned by their fore-fathers who discovered that the Cave exists there and they lived there for many centuries.
The cave is located at a distance of about 6 kilometers away from Iyin Ekiti in Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State This is about 3 kilometers away from Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
The Cave still maintains its natural look while evidence of long use still exists.
It has demarcated rooms separated by low height walls made from mud bricks which had become strong and difficult to pull down. Also, small boulders used as ‘pillows’ by old occupants still remain in the Cave.
The cave has an age long history of having been the safe harbor for the Iyin and Ado-Ekiti warriors during the inter-township fight with the Ikere-Ekiti people of Ekiti state.
The warriors and the people would run to the cave for safety till the land is restored back to normalcy.
On the long run many of the people decided to stay back and live in the cave instead than running about anytime there is a war.
Gradually a lot of Iyin Ekiti people abandoned their main town and started living in the cave till about the 1930’s when few of them begin to return back to their town.
“Esa Cave in Iyin-Ekiti is one of those viable sites.
It can accommodate 3,000 people apart from other sites within its vicinity that can be a good resort.
Esa Cave is the third most viable resort after Ikogosi and Arinta Waterfall in Ekiti.
It has the strength to boost local economy through revenue generation and job creation.
Regional and international cooperation is key to protecting the Red Sea ecosystem and advancing scientific research, a senior member of the Jordanian royal family said on Saturday.
Speaking at the “First International Conference on the Red Sea Ecosphere: Conservation and Management of the Red Sea Marine Environment,” Prince El-Hassan bin Talal, stressed the importance of developing the Great Rift Valley and addressing disparities in order to empower its people.
He said that scientific and effective development based on common interests was the foundation for stability, and that planning and the exchange of knowledge, experience and data were vital in tackling climate change.
The conference was organized by Jordan’s Higher Council for Science and Technology — of which the prince is chairman — in collaboration with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, the University of Jordan and Yarmouk University.
Held in line with the UN’s Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, its aim is to highlight the role colleges, research institutions and governmental and nongovernmental organizations play in understanding and preserving the Red Sea environment.
HCST Secretary-General Abdullah al-Moussa said the Red Sea was a strategic corridor for the global economy, not just nations along its shores, and emphasized the need to protect its marine ecosystem and the environments of cities along its coast.
Nayef al-Bakheet, chief commissioner of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, said the event hoped to produce recommendations that would benefit Aqaba’s marine environment. The Aqaba Marine Reserve is seeking to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Khaled Toukan, head of the HCST’s fellowship advisory team, said that hundreds of ships passed through the Red Sea every day, affecting its environment, and that the purpose of the conference was to present ideas based on real data regarding sea level and temperature, waste, marine life and the preservation of coral reefs.
Costas Papanikolas, an adviser on climate change to the president of Cyprus, said it was vital to develop an action plan to tackle regional challenges, while noting there had been a decline in international and regional funding for climate change research.
Iran’s powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard on Saturday launched a new satellite-carrying rocket, state TV reported, seeking to demonstrate the force’s space prowess even as anti-government protests rage across the country.
State TV said the Guard successfully launched the solid-fueled rocket — what it called a Ghaem-100 satellite carrier. Iranian state TV did not immediately show any footage of the launch.
The state-run IRNA news agency reported that the carrier would be able to put a satellite weighing 80 kg (176 pounds) into orbit some 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Earth.
Gen. Amir Ali Hajjizadeh, the commander of the Guard’s aerospace division, said he hoped the Guard would soon use the rocket to put a new satellite, named Nahid, into orbit.
Iran says its satellite program, like its nuclear activities, is aimed at scientific research and other civilian applications.
The US and other Western countries have long been suspicious of the program because the same technology can be used to develop long-range missiles.
The announcement came amid protests that have embroiled the country for seven weeks calling for overthrowing the clerical rule.
Bethelkirken, otherwise known as the Blue Church, is considered to be one of the oldest and most beautiful structures that can be found in the autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland.
Located in the capital and largest city of the Qeqqata Municipality, Sisimiut, the Bethel Church was ordered and paid by the Greenlandic congregation on its own.
Since the building was pre-fabricated in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1771, for which the people paid with 60 barrels of blubber from four whales, it was at first erected and disassembled in Denmark, so that the parts would be numbered in order for the people in Greenland to erect it themselves, faster and easier.
It was planned for Bethelkirken to be consecrated in 1773, however, due to the bad weather the ship which was supposed to bring the church to Sisimiut, had to wait in Norway, and when it waited long enough for the weather to improve, it brought successfully what was the most awaited, most sacred object to the local community.
Unfortunately, an epidemic delayed the construction once again.
Finally, the most awaited and badly wanted religious object was consecrated in 1775, since when it was used solely for religious purposes up until the Sisimiut Museum converted it into a museum with hope to protect this great treasure.
The exterior is a colorful as one can imagine it to be, with white corners marking the building’s ends, and in between them are the colorful blue walls from where the church gets its name.
The colorful red roof is also easy to distinguish from the rest of the buildings that surrounds it, while at the central part is a tower atop which is a weathervane which still has the year 1773, when the church was supposed to be consecrated.
Nowadays, known to be the oldest intact church building in the nation, Bethelkirken operates solely as a museum within which is shown a permanent exhibit that showcases the traditional Greenlandic shaman from 18 century, explaining to the visitors how the locals were listening to the solutions about the problems and dilemmas with which they were facing in the early colonial era.
In addition, visitors can also learn about the pre-Christian religion in Greenland, and how the Danish missionaries spread the Christianity in this parts.
All in all, being part of a long history, Bethelkirken is a marvelous, yet quite monumental monument from Greenland which should never be missed even if one is visiting the other part of the nation.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has inaugurated the Virginia Tech. Nigerian Bowen Equatorial Aeronomy Radar (VT-NigerBEAR) at Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.
Performing the inauguration on Friday at the institution’s premises, Osinbajo said it was the first and currently the only deployment of an equatorial-low-latitude SuperDARN in the world.
The project involves local and international teams and institutions, including the Virginia Tech SuperDarn HF radar group, the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Bowen University and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
According to the vice president, the VT NigerBear is the 36th Super Dual Auroral Radar Network or SuperDarn, for short, in the world.
“The SuperDarn, as we have heard, is a network of High Frequency (HF) radars that look into Earth’s upper atmosphere.
“The radars operate round the clock and they observe the motion of charged particles (plasma) in the ionosphere and other effects that provide scientists with information on Earth’s space environment.
“Their work provides insights into space weather hazards. So all long distance High Frequency signals such as in ocean going vessels, aircraft, global broadcast communications and short wave radio communication may be affected by irregularities in the ionosphere.
“These irregularities degrade HF and GPS signals; the SuperDarn discovers these irregularities so that remedial action may then be taken.”
He said that the first SuperDarn monitoring conditions of the near-Earth space environment in the high latitude regions achieved its official status in 1995.
Osinbajo said that in 2005, the “mid-latitude” SuperDARN began operating at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia, USA.
He said that the second was deployed in Hokkaido, Japan in, 2006.
“Today, there are 21 mid-latitude SuperDARN radars across the world, providing immense technology advantages at the mid-latitude regions.
“But irregularities in the ionosphere are also found in the lower latitudes, the equatorial low latitudes, and because there was no SuperDarn, the causes of degrading HF and GPS signals have remained a mystery.
“Now our own SuperDarn radar, the VTNigerBear will resolve that mystery.
“The VTNigerBear is the first and currently the only deployment of an equatorial-low-latitude SuperDARN anywhere in the world.
“This is a major leap forward in finding solutions to degradation of HF and GPS signals and will directly impact so many aspects of life and commerce.
“The extensive experience of the SuperDARN creates opportunities for Nigeria to leverage existing expertise, information and data as she joins a global network with experience spanning decades.”
Osinbajo said the project could radically transform communications – infrastructure, space research, equipment design, geo-mapping, forecasting and prediction of atmospheric, climatic and oceanic conditions within Nigeria and the near low latitudes.
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned the newly constructed border bridge linking Nigeria and Cameroon, including a joint border post for seamless trade and migration between the two countries.
President Buhari and President of Cameroon, Paul Biya, performed the joint inauguration of the 1.5 km Ekok/Mfum Bridge and Joint Border Post (JBP) at Mfun, Cross River State.
Performing the ceremony, the duo said the link bridge project would deepen socio-economic and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Cameroon, while the Joint Border Post would not only strengthen the existing cordial relations but enhance the volume of economic activities in the region, as well as movement of persons, goods and services with countries along the corridors.
In a statement released by the Deputy Director of Press, Ministry of Transportation, Ogbonna Anastasia, Friday, Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zuberu Dada, said that the development would provide a veritable synergy between inter-country regions to combat the teeming security challenges bedeviling the countries.
According to him, it will also serve as a vital link between the Western and Southern African regions. The Federal Republic of Nigeria also expects that this Joint Border Post and bridge will enhance security patrol and facilitate effective cooperation in this part of our border with the Republic of Cameroon.
“It is also our hope that it will complement the efforts of the Governments of Nigeria and Cameroon to combat the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism in our region”, he added.
Buhari, however, commended the development partners, African Development Bank, AfDB; and World Bank for providing the funds and support given to the Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS; and Economic Community of Central African States, ECCAS, to help Nigeria and Cameroon complete the projects in record time.
On his part, President Biya of Cameroon, who was represented by his Minister for Public Works, Emmanuel Nganuo Djours, stated that: “the construction of the bridge over Cross River is part of the Transport Facilitation Program on the Bamenda – Manfe – Abakaliki – Enugu – corridors. The corridor covers 441 metres of road that will facilitate trade and strengthen relations between Cameroon and Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), who expressed delight over the completion of the project, said the bridge would play a significant role in networking several cities across Africa.
“What is most important is that this bridge connects Nigeria and Cameroon. It is the beginning of a trans-African connection. We are not just trying to connect Nigeria and Cameroon; we are trying to connect Lagos to Mombasa in Kenya and this is the significance of this bridge,” he said.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Transportation, Nigeria, Prince Ademola Adegoroye, who hailed the roles of international development agencies and partners in the project, stressed that inter-governmental agencies of both countries, such as Customs, Immigration and others should work in synergy to promote mutual benefits and healthy coexistence between both nations.
He said: “the main objective of this project is for better trade facilitation between both countries by combining customs clearance and other activities in one place to achieve economies of scale, simplify customs procedures and increase cooperation and coordination of controls amongst others.
“It is my hope that as border officials work together in cooperation, the ties that bind our countries will further be strengthened to the benefit of all. Also, it is hoped that the comfort of the new facility will enable the officials work together in peace and harmony, resulting in the prosperity of the people of the region,” he advised
The Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, represented by his Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dan Osim Asu, commended the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon for the remarkable project that will boost commerce and industry along the frontier states.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities is set to summon an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council following the decision of the Federal Government to pay the lecturers half salaries for the month of October, 2022.
Though no date has been fixed yet, our correspondent gathered that the decision to convene a meeting followed the drama which erupted when members of the union received half salaries in their accounts.
Speaking with our correspondent in Abuja, ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the development.
“Half salaries were paid, no reasons were given whatsoever. We learnt that Ngige wrote the office of the Accountant General and Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system and told them to only pay us for the period when we called off the strike.
“We heard there was a letter to that effect but we haven’t gotten it yet. We are going to summon a meeting.”
When our correspondent reached out to the Ministry of Education which serves as the supervisory ministry for universities, the spokesperson of the ministry said, “We don’t pay salary at the Ministry of Education. Kindly direct your question to the office of the Accountant General.”
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Jos chapter on Friday ordered its members to stay at home indefinitely, pending the payment of withheld salaries by the federal government.
The ASUU branch made this known in a statement made available to news correspondent and signed by the branch chairperson, Professor Lazarus Maigoro.
LN247 had earlier reported how the government had paid half salaries to the striking university lecturers.
The statement partly reads, “One of the issues agreed at the meeting was that 50% of the backlog of eight months arrears of our withheld salaries will be paid to our members immediately but as at the time of writing this press release, only 17 days prorated October salary was paid to our members by the office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
“Having stayed for about nine months running now, our members in the University of Jos considered this an insult to them by the Accountant Gereral of the Federation.
“Is the Accountant General of the Federation actually answerable to the Minister of Labour? So, if today the Minister of Agriculture directs the Accountant General of the Federation to withhold the salaries of the staff of the Agricultural Research Institutes who have been on strike for over a year, will he obey that?
“We wonder why Ngige is keen about withholding the salaries of ASUU members because staff of some Agricultural Research Institutes have been on strike for almost a year but they have been receiving their salaries regularly. Is this policy only for ASUU members?
“We are also aware that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, wrote a memo to the Accountant General asking him to pay our members only from the day we suspended the strike.
“By this singular act, the Minister of Labour and Employment has casualised the work of the University Lecturers unfortunately.
“This further creates doubts on our minds as to whether the understanding reached with the leadership of the House of Representatives on some of the issues will be implemented at all by those who are saddled with the responsibility of doing so in order to avoid further needless strikes.
“From all indications, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has personalised the matter between him and our union and is on a mission for vendetta.
“It has become crystal clear now that he wasn’t happy that the House of Representatives brokered a truce on some of the issues we went on strike for and has gone behind to undermine it.
“It is also very clear to us now why he shamelessly walked out on the leadership of the House of Representatives at one of the meetings with all stakeholders to the glare of all Nigerians because he never wanted any form of resolution to be reached on the issues being discussed and is the nation.
“In view of the bottleneck placed by Ngige towards paying our members the backlog of our salaries, the congress of ASUU University of Jos met today November 4, 2022 and resolved to stay at home, though not on strike until the backlog of the withheld salaries are paid.
“For the avoidance of doubt, our members are back to work, willing and ready to work but are unable to work. Based on the revised academic calendar for the 2020/2021 session approved by the senate of the University, lectures should have started already but the challenge of lack of payment of salaries has constrained our members from going to the classroom to teach.
“What this implies is that the students who have resumed already will have to wait indefinitely while we wait for our withheld salaries to be paid to us”.
