Pakistani Ex-Prime Minister, Imran Khan Wounded At Protest March

1

Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has survived a gun attack on his convoy while holding a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad.

He was wounded in the leg when a burst of gunfire hit his vehicle. One person was killed and at least five others were injured.

There was no immediate official comment on the motive for the attack which allies say was an assassination bid.

The protest march had been called to demand early elections.

Mr Khan, 70, was leading the march, which was meant to end in the capital Islamabad.

The former international cricket star turned politician was seen being taken to a hospital in Lahore. A party spokesman said he had been hit in the shin.

He was in a stable condition, said an official from his PTI party, provincial health minister Yasmeen Rashid.

Police released a video confession of a man they arrested who they say had attempted to kill the former prime minister.

It is unclear under what conditions the interview was carried out but in it the man is asked by police why he opened fire, and replies: “He was misguiding the people. I wanted to kill him. I tried to kill him.”

Video footage from the scene shows Mr Khan and his supporters on a shipping container being towed by a lorry before a burst of gunfire is heard. Mr Khan is then seen ducking, as those around him try to cover him.

Another video shows a conscious Mr Khan with a bandage on his right leg being taken away in a vehicle after the shooting.

A PTI member is also seen with a bandage on his face and blood on his clothing, saying that people should pray for Mr Khan and all those injured.

Lagos State Development And Property Corporation Clocks 50 Years

0

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu was on Thursday decorated with the award of the “Most Performing Governor on Housing in the Federation”, in recognition of his stride in housing development in Lagos State.

The award was presented to the Governor by the Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN), at the event to mark 50 years of the existence of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) which had stakeholders in the housing and property sector discussing the THEME “Unfolding Arms to Join Hands: Moving the Lagos Property Market Forward”.

Speaking, the President, Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN), Dr. Victor Onukwugha said the legacy of LSDPC should be emulated across the Country, saying that among all 36 governors X-trayed in the Country, it was only in Lagos the Governor has continued to work with housing corporations with openness.

Speaking, the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal (Abisogun II), who presented the award to Sanwo-Olu applauded the Governor “for adding value to the Corporation (LSDPC)”, saying some of the templates of the Corporation have formed the basis for policy making in the housing sector

“There is one very important thing that we must emphasised which is the continuity of the work force. LSCDC is a professional organisation. Professionalism is very important and that is why the Corporation is doing very well,” he said.

The traditional ruler who was a former Commisoner for Housing in Lagos, said “we will continue to be proud of you”, assuring the Corporation of provision of lands upon demands within the confines of Iruland for housing development.

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu who is 15th governor of Lagos said continuity remains key as the bedrock of the sustainable development in Lagos.

According to Sanwo-Olu, recent indices showing Lagos is advancing in the rank of 70 liveable cities of the world, said the need to make the city conducive for living has informed consistency in housing provisions to meet increasing demands.

According to him, such projects as newly constructed fire stations and provision of fire trucks were efforts borne out of need to fortify emergency response, while making Lagos more liveable and conducive.

Stating that safety, security, and housing provisions among other indices are critical subjects which have been given priority for an economy as Lagos to stay safe, Sanwo-Olu said no stone will be left unturned to keep the city safe.

Sanwo-Olu who recalled memories of the stride of LSDPC, however charged the work force to do more to sustain the Corporation’s achievements in housing provision.

He charged the work force to maintain the momentum of driving the organisation for sustainability, as a “housing provider of choice” in the State.

Speaking to LN247 Environment correspondent, Gimalo-Angel Olowogoke, Managing Director, Cruxstone Development & Investment Limited, Dr. Adetoro Bank-Omotoye praised Lagos state government for solving the needs of the people as regards property, stating that Lagos state caters for low, middle and high class. He believes that Lagos state will bring the issue of housing deficit in the state to the barest minimum.

Speaking, the MD/CEO LSDPC, Hon. Ayodeji Joseph, said 50 years of housing delivery across the State by the Corporation “is indeed worth celebrating.”

According to him, the Agency has consistently fulfilled its mandate of developing plans for providing homes for low and medium income earners.

He said since commercialisation of the corporation, it stopped receiving subventions from the government to run its mandate of providing low and medium housing cost.

He added the Corporation has continued to run on Public Private Partnership arrangement creatively enhanced by Sanwo-Olu when he served as MD/CEO of the Corporation between 2016 and 2018.

He applauded Gov Sanwo-Olu for the support his government accorded to the Corporation to meet its demands, saying the Governor has full support of the work force to return for a second term.

The Chairman, the State House of Assembly Committee on Housing, Hon. Rasheed Makinde said being in business for 50 years with capital intensive projects was commendable, saying development of housing is organic.

He said the quality and affordability of the housing schemes have been awarding, stating the Corporation must work to embrace local content for construction materials, while developing creative ways to outsmart land limitations for more housing construction.

Exploring Amberd Fortress, Armenia

0

Dating back to the seventh century, Amberd Fortress is one of the most stunning places to visit in Armenia.

Formerly among the Armenian Kingdom’s primary military-defensive points, the fortress can be reached in about an hour from the capital city Yerevan.

However, snowfall can make the fortress inaccessible during the winter months, with the weather usually improving by late May.

The view from the top of the fortress is truly breathtaking, while the building itself is also stunning.

Amberd Fortress is a short trip from the village of Byurakan, home of the Byurakan Observatory.

Anambra Ministry Of Health Urges Flood Victims On Use Of Water Guards

0

The Anambra State Ministry of Health has sensitized flood victims on the use of water guards to prevent diseases. The sensitisation was carried out simultaneously at the various camps across the affected local government areas of the state.

Speaking during the exercise, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike said that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration’s priority is to ensure healthy living through the prevention of diseases, which is the reason for the ongoing massive hygiene sensitisation.

The Commissioner, who made this known while rounding off his visits at one of the camps in Odekpe, Ogbaru Local Government Area, explained that the water guards will help the flood victims to be free from all forms of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea and cholera.

He further explained that cholera as a bacteria disease usually spreads through contaminated water that can also cause diarrhoea and dehydration and noted that if left untreated, can be fatal within hours.

Dr. Obidike commended Governor Soludo for giving the health ministry necessary support that helped them in establishing temporary clinics in all the camps.

Officials from World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations International Children Fund (UNICEF) among others, accompanied the commissioner on the visit.

NYSC Introduces New Fitness Policy For Members

0

The National Youth Service Corps has announced that prospective corps members will henceforth be required to present fitness certificates from recognised public health facilities at orientation camps across the country.

Adding that the certificate of fitness will become a requirement for registration at camps, the Director, Press and Public Relations of the NYSC, Eddy Megwa, said in a statement that the new policy begins with the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Orientation Course.

The director said the fitness test is to help the scheme ascertain the health status of corpers and to fish out those who lie about their medical conditions.

Megwa said, “In order to avail the scheme credible information on their health status and also protect them from exploitation by unscrupulous persons.

“It is pertinent to note that the NYSC Orientation Camp Clinics across the nation are managed by the National Health Insurance Authority with the supervision of consultants from tertiary health institutions.

“In view of the regimentation and physical demands of some activities of the NYSC orientation programme, the management of the scheme introduced presentation of Certificate of Fitness from recognised public health facilities by prospective corps members as a requirement for registration at the orientation camp.

“The essence is to enable camp officials manage those who are not fit to undertake certain activities in the camp. This has been largely misunderstood, leading to extortion of some prospective corps members by fraudulent individuals in their bid to secure such documents some of which may not stand a test of integrity.“

Kogi State Healthcare Reforms Receive Appraisal From Commissioner

0

The Kogi State commissioner for health, Dr Zakari Usman has lauded the activities of the Kogi State Government to reform the health sector. He did this during the opening ceremony of the physicians’ week of NMA Kogi State chapter stating that the Kogi state present administration under the watch of Governor Yahaya Bello has done more in restructuring its health sector with the implementation of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) and Bello Care in order to take care of the health of the most vulnerable citizens and those at the grass root.

He emphasized the importance of healthcare reforms in moving forward the healthcare service delivery in Nigeria and enumerated some basic problems bedeviling the sector like brain drain, recruitment of quacks, and corruption among others.

He also revealed the drivers of health sector reform as poor management of health resources, poorly maintained physical health infrastructures, erratic supply and availability of drugs, and high prevalence of fake adulterated and substandard drugs.

The National President of the NMA represented by the national deputy secretary general, Dr Simeon Oyiguh has called on doctors to demonstrate professionalism while carrying out their duties thereby distancing themselves from religious, tribal and political sentiment to advance the Nation.

Earlier in the week, the national president of NMA Kogi Dr Uche R. Ojima while addressing journalists presented the theme of the 2022 physicians week as “ Healthcare Delivery System and the 2023 Democratic Transition: A Time to Change the Narrative while the subtheme is “mitigating the impact of brain drain on the dwindling human resource for health in Nigeria and Health sectors reform in the face of emerging public health threats” seized the opportunity to call on the government to act fast and fix healthcare problems in Nigeria to avoid total collapse of the health sector.

FG Employing Multidisciplinary Approach For Cancer Treatment –NCCP Coordinator

0

As part of efforts to ensure holistic treatment of cancer in Nigeria, the Federal Government is employing  multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of patients. Dr Okpako Okpikpi, the National Coordinator, National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), said this in Abuja.

According to Okpikpi, cancer treatment which begins with proper diagnosis needs a wholistic approach as a single cancer patient may already have one or two other illnesses which will require multidisciplinary treatment plan.

To this end, he said, the Ministry of Health had issued a circular approving the setting up of Multidisciplinary Tumour Boards (MDTs)  as pre-requisite for a hospital to qualify as a Cancer Treatment Centre.

The circular, which was made available to newsmen was dated Nov. 29, 2021 with Ref: NCCP/DHS/030/1, addressed to all Chief Executive Officers of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions and titled “Setting Up of MDTs in Cancer Treatment Centers”.

Signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Mahmuda Mamman, it directed the CEOs of the referred institutions to set up MDTs in their various institutions and inform all the healthcare workers of the content of the circular for immediate compliance.

Part of the circular read thus: “MDTs board is a team of caregivers coming together to review cancer patients with the sole aim of improving the quality of care for the patient.

“The review by MDTs must be evidence-based, using approved guidelines for reference purposes.

“The MDT is expected to have a standard operation manual and a meeting format to review all cancer patients before a final decision on the best modality of treatment is taken.

“It could be a hospital-wide tumour board or a disease specific tumour board.”

Okpikpi also spoke about the International Cancer Week (ICW) 2022 in Abuja from Nov. 1 to 4, with the theme: “Bridging the Cancer Care Gap: Improving Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Management.”

He said that it was aimed at addressing the issue of wrong and late diagnosis of cancer.

“We have heard about cases of wrong diagnosis but if you get diagnosis right, of course you are on the right path.

“Once you mis-diagnose, it’s like every other thing is a waste, resources,  expertise, everything, nothing will work out.

“So, here we are talking about improving diagnosis and this is one of the areas that we found out that there are lots of gaps because many of our hospitals are not really as equipped as they should be for us to have the right diagnosis.

“That is also why we are emphasising it in this ICW and talking about multidisciplinary management.”

He also said that it would buttress the intent of the circular to give cancer patients a better treatment approach.

About other interventions, the coordinator said that the Federal Government has six designated centres  of excellence for oncology.

He said that at these centres, one in each geo-political zone, all kinds of cancers could be managed there as they had been equipped with modern equipment.

He added that “beyond that, government has also come up with what we call Cancer Access Partnership Programme. It is a chemotherapy assess programme which started in 2019.

“This programme ensures that cancer medicines are made available to all patients at 50 per cent less the current price in the market so that medicines are made cheaper for them.”

He also said that the Cancer Health Fund, also an initiative of the Federal Government, makes money available for indigent patients who cannot afford cost of treatment.

According to him, the fund is limited to patients with either breast, cervix or prostate cancer.
