Giant New Mural Celebrates ‘Warrior’ Maradona In Buenos Aires

0

An Argentine artist has painted a giant mural of late soccer legend Diego Maradona in Buenos Aires to commemorate what would have been the World Cup winner’s 62nd birthday at the end of October.

Muralist Martín Ron filled the 1,600-square-meter (17,000- square-ft) wall in the heart of the city with a depiction of Maradona, based on a photo of him urging his team on during the World Cup final against Germany in 1990, which Argentina went on to lose.

“We already know that he was the best player in the world, but who was he as a person? He was a warrior, he went up against adversity, even all injured, he faced whatever came at him,” Ron, 41, said in an interview.

Maradona died of cardiac arrest at the age of 60 in late 2020, which sparked off a nationwide period of mourning for the troubled star who was revered by millions.

The nearly completed mural will take in total some 25 days of work for Ron and a team of seven artists, and uses 800 liters (200 gallons) of paint. Ron said it was the largest mural of Maradona ever – around 45 meters (148 ft) high, similar in height to New York’s Statue of Liberty.

Ron added three stars to the mural to represent Argentina’s two World Cup wins in 1978 and 1986 – and what he hopes will be another in Qatar this year.

Cars driving by honked their horns and passersby stopped to take photos.

“On a sporting level, he is my greatest idol,” said Sebastián Martínez, a 46-year-old physical education teacher who had a Maradona tattoo on his leg. “It is a nice tribute to him.”

Sokoto School Principals To Enjoy Enhanced Salary Package

0

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, on Tuesday inaugurated a committee to advise the state government on remuneration of Principals of public secondary schools in the state.

Tambuwal, while inaugurating the committee said the plan for the enhanced pay package of principals was in order to commensurate their responsibilities.

This is contained in a statement issued by Muhammad Bello, the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the governor, in Sokoto.

The governor said that in no distant future after his pledge has been redeemed, primary school teachers too will start enjoying ‘amplified emoluments’.

“We are beginning with the remunerations of principals of secondary schools as a first phase because we have a baseline data on them.

“A similar gesture will be extended to our primary schools because they are the critical foundation for all subsequent educational pursuits.

“So now we are considering the consolidation of the salaries of principals, who have reached the appropriate level,” he said.

Tambuwal tasked the 11-man committee headed by a former Head of Service in the state, Dr Buhari Bello, with the task of coming up with appropriate modalities for the implementation of the planned incentives.

In another development, the governor had received a committee report on the establishment of a Training Institute in the state.

Tambuwal said the development was to address the declining strength of qualified and experienced staff, resulting from loss of institutional memories and the subsequent erosion of public service norms and services.

“We are all aware of the situation of civil service at the state level and nationwide. It is fast losing staff, norms and values.

“Globally, the recipe for policy formulation and implementation as well as successful development, is the existence of a working bureaucracy, without which states cannot be properly ran.

“This is why it is important to initiate an institute such as this to change the narrative.

“This is to ensure that those coming into the public service in the state will receive training and be imbued with values to run an efficient, effective and virile public service,” he said.

The governor commended the committee’s job and assured that the state government would study the reports carefully with a view to establishing the institute.

Woman Marks 100th Birthday By Staging Her Own Art Exhibition

Nada Rudan is most relaxed when painting, a skill she discovered at the age of 87 and culminating this summer in an exhibition of her artwork — to mark her 100th birthday.

Bosnian native Rudan says she started to paint at a late age to keep herself busy and now finds the days are often too short to fit in everything she planned to do. Her daily routine is to paint for three hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon, when she is at home.

“I don’t know what boredom means, I don’t know what depression means, I always find some-thing to do,” she says.

Her independent spirit, good health and love of travel help.

After her exhibition in Sarajevo in late June, Rudan left for a month’s holiday on the Adriatic coast and then travelled on to Germany where her daughter lives.

“I am determined not to become a burden to my children,” the mother of two, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of four children said in an interview in her spacious home in central Sarajevo, surrounded by some of her estimated 200 paintings.

“And I am calm, I don’t want to be nervous, I always think first and then act,” says Rudan, who made a living as a dressmaker, keeping on “selected customers” until she was 85.

EPL: Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi Ranked Premiership Best Ball Passer

0

Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi has been tagged the best passer of the ball in the English Premier League in this present season.

This is evident on the official website, premierleague.com, which states the Everton Playmaker as the best of all this term.

The Nigeria international is also the joint-second player with the most assists in the EPL (five), along with Manchester City’s Bernado Silva.

Iwobi has really stepped up his game and has won man of the match for Everton on many occassions in the Premier League.

Iwobi put up a master-class performance against Crystal Palace Saturday, as he sprinkled his creative passes, assisting two goals and spraying forward passes throughout the game in the Toffees’ 3-0 win.

He had 53 touches, three key passes, 87 percent pass success rate, created two big chances, 13 final third passes, and two successful long balls. Defensively too, the former Arsenal man had a 100 per cent tackle success rate and four-ball recoveries to emerge as the Man-of-The-Match.

The balance in midfield has allowed Iwobi to get forward more, and he’s started turning this into returns, with one goal and five assists in his last eight matches.

The 26-year-old, who has made 476 passes this season, beat Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka (352), Gabriel Jesus (287) and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane (265) to the top spot.

Other players in the Top 10 are Newcastle’s Joelinton (381), Fulham’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid (362), Brighton’s Leandro Trossard (333), Roberto Firmino (324), Ivan Toney (267), Jadon Sancho (285) and Demarai Gray (265).

Iwobi has been tested in many positions at Everton and he has really impressed for Everton.

Even when pressed by the opposition, he was able to break the press or remain calm in possession.

Since the arrival of Frank Lampard, Iwobi is on the road to resurgence, even more so since the start of the 2022-23 season. Iwobi has never been a conventional winger; he has looked at home when playing as a central midfielder.

Iwobi not only offers creativity but through his non-stop running, has been omnipresent in the middle of the park. The redefined role has given birth to a new version of Iwobi: composed, creative genius and the heartbeat of the team.
