Beautiful Nigeria: Dadin Kowa Dam, Gombe State

0

The Dadin Kowa Dam is situated in Yamaltu Deba local government area of Gombe State in the North east part of Nigeria.

The dam is located about 35 kilometers to the east of Gombe town, and provides drinking water for the town.

In August 2001 the federal government announced that it would spend $32 million to complete the Dadin Kowa Dam power generation facilities.

In March 2009 N7 billion was allocated to complete the hydro-electrical generation component of the dam, and another N500 million to complete the canal, which would irrigate 6,600 hectares of farmland.

In August 2009 Governor Goje said that less than N600 million was needed to provide the canals.

After prioritization by the government for completion of the project in 2016, the ministry concluded completion of the dam in August 2021.[11] As of September 2021, the Ministry of Power hadn’t enabled full use of energy from the dam as part of the grid.

The dam was completed by the federal government in 1984, with the goal of providing irrigation and electricity for the planned Gongola sugar plantation project.

Major Hurricane Roslyn Heads For Hit On Mexico’s Coast

0

Hurricane Roslyn grew to Category 4 force on Saturday as it headed for a collision with Mexico’s Pacific coast, likely north of the resort of Puerto Vallarta.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Roslyn’s maximum sustained winds had increased to 130 mph (215 kph) by midday Saturday, and it was expected to grow still further.

The storm was centered about 155 miles (250 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes — the point of land jutting into the Pacific south of Puerto Vallarta — and moving north-northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).

The forecast called for Roslyn to begin shifting to a northward movement and then northeast, putting it on path that could take it close to Cabo Corrientes and the Puerto Vallarta region on Saturday night or early Sunday before making landfall in Nayarit state on Sunday morning.

Hurricane Orlene made landfall Oct. 3 a little farther north in roughly the same region, about 45 miles (75 kilometers) southeast of the resort of Mazatlan.

Hurricane-force winds extended out 30 miles (45 kilometers) from Roslyn’s core, while tropical storm-force winds extended out to 80 miles (130 kilometers), the U.S. hurricane center said.

US-Mexico: Illegal border Crossings Hit Annual High

0

A surge in migration from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua in September brought the number of illegal crossings to the highest level ever recorded in a fiscal year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The year-end numbers reflect deteriorating economic and political conditions in some countries, the relative strength of the U.S. economy and uneven enforcement of Trump-era asylum restrictions.

Migrants were stopped 227,547 times in September at the U.S. border with Mexico, the third-highest month of Joe Biden’s presidency.

It was up 11.5% from 204,087 times in August and 18.5% from 192,001 times in September 2021.

In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, migrants were stopped 2.38 million times, up 37% from 1.73 million times the year before, according to figures released late Friday night.

The annual total surpassed 2 million for the first time in August and is more than twice the highest level during Donald Trump’s presidency in 2019.

Nearly 78,000 migrants from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua were stopped in September, compared to about 58,000 from Mexico and three countries of northern Central America that have historically accounted for most of the flow.

U.S. and Mexican officials said Friday that Venezuelan migration to the United States plunged 80% since Oct. 12, when the U.S. began expelling Venezuelans to Mexico under Title 42.

At the same time, the Biden administration pledged to admit up to 24,000 Venezuelans to the United States on humanitarian parole if they apply online with a financial sponsor and enter through an airport, similar to how tens of thousands of Ukrainians have come since Russia invaded their country.

“While this early data is not reflected in the (September) report, it confirms what we’ve said all along: When there is a lawful and orderly way to enter the country, individuals will be less likely to put their lives in the hands of smugglers and try to cross the border unlawfully,” said CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus.

The expansion of Title 42 for Venezuelans to be expelled to Mexico came despite the administration’s attempt to end the public health authority in May, which was blocked by a federal judge.

Exploring Mud Volcanoes, Azerbaijan

0

The Mud Volcanoes are an interesting phenomenon which can be found within the coastal area of the Republic of Azerbaijan, however, most of them are located in the vicinity of the Gobustan National Park.

Even though Azerbaijan is known as the land of fire, it is very unusual to say that the country has volcanoes which most likely will not grow to the size of a normal volcano, but it is certain that from time to time they will do a small mud eruption.

As it is claimed that Azerbaijan has more than half of the mud volcanoes from the world, it is also rumored that they have healing qualities which are source for the local legends, and it is common to see people immersing in the dark grey “melted” earth.

With different sizes, Toragay and Great Kanizdag in Gobustan, and Otmanbozdag and Bozdag-Guzdek on Absheron are definitely the biggest ones that can be seen here, with elevation that is measured at 400 meters (1,312 feet) above the sea level.

Usually these volcanoes are not dangerous to the local communities, although, according to local residents, one volcanic eruption that was on Mount Bozdağ killed some 2,000 sheep and also 6 shepherds who were camping in its crater.

In addition, there are also more than 140 mud volcanoes that can be found in the Caspian Sea which are able to create small islets and banks.

It is considered that 8 islands in the Baku Archipelago were created by mud volcanoes.

Most of the time the mud volcanoes are associated with oilfields, which is why they are found mostly in the Caucasus region where there are oil and gas fields.

Recognized as a wonderful feature of the nature, the Azeri mud volcanoes were even included in one NASA research, where the agency concluded that the volcanoes are similar to some uplands of Mars, mainly for their structure.

All in all, gaining more attention from the travelers visiting Azerbaijan, the Azeri Mud Volcanoes are a definite spectacular phenomenon that should not be missed while in the area.

Gbajabiamila Demands Solution To Brain Drain In Nigerian Health Sector

0

The Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed sadness over the brain drain phenomenon that has hit the Health sector.

Gbajabiamila said a situation whereby over 2,000 Resident Doctors had left the shores of the country, with about 800 leaving in the last eight months, bringing the average to about 100 medical doctors leaving the country monthly in search of better working conditions, was unacceptable.

He, however, said the time had come for the government to holistically address the issues responsible for the negative trend.

He stated this in Abuja on Thursday, when the Executives of the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, led by its President, Dr Emeka Orji, paid him a course visit.

Gbajabiamila, however, cautioned that the issue of funding must be properly situated within the context of the prevailing global economic situation since Nigeria is not an island.

Responding to the figures of the Resident doctors that had left Nigeria due to poor remuneration, Gbajabiamila said, “That is a very scary figure and that is not very encouraging for a country of over 200 million people to have the core of your medical team, your young ones, resident doctors, leaving in droves like that, definitely something must be wrong.

“You have identified that to be the issue of emoluments, that’s always a very important issue. If you work, you must get paid and you must get paid a good salary.

While commending those who decided to stay behind despite the situation, Gbajabiamila said, “ I would like to encourage you to do is to tarry a while, be patient, and stay.

“As long as you have our ears here as your legislature, we will always, as best as possible, come to your aid.”

“So, let’s put a stop to this brain drain as best as we can whilst we, on this side, try to make the environment a lot easier for you.”

The Speaker also assured the Association that the clamour for an increase in the budgetary allocation for the Health sector to meet the 2001 Abuja Declaration of 15% of the annual budget allocation to health would be looked into, being a critical sector of the economy.

Cautioning stakeholders against the tradition of equating the Ministry’s budgetary allocation to the entire budget of the sector, Gbajabiamila nevertheless promised that the House would ensure that the sector was not shortchanged in the allocation of resources to it.

The Speaker also promised to look into the other demands of the group on adequate funding of residency training, restoration of the Overseas Exchange Programme, the need to amend the Medical Registration Act, and an upward review of the salary structure for Resident doctors, all within available resources.

He urged the Association to furnish his office with detailed information on some of the issues, saying, “I’d like to have some information on that in writing so that when we are making a case to the government, we will be able to furnish them with even more details, to know exactly what case we are trying to make.”

The President of the Association, Dr Emeka Orji appreciated the Speaker and the House for their successful interventions in NARD issues with the government in the past.

Dr Orji urged the Speaker to intervene in the brain drain syndrome that had hit the medical practice in the country due to poor working conditions.

He also presented to the Speaker other demands of the Association on adequate funding of residency training, restoration of the Overseas Exchange Programme, the need to amend the Medical Registration Act and upward review of the salary structure for resident doctors, among others.

Cross River State Noodles factory premium products CALAVITA and KISIMIE, will soon receive certification from the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The Governor, Professor Ben Ayade made this known after an inspection of the noodles factory at the industrial park in Calabar, the Cross River State capital southern Nigeria.

Governor Ayade, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of noodles produced at the factory, said that the products would be pushed into the open market once it is certified.

Governor Ayade hinted that the agency had earlier visited the factory and suggested specific modifications before certification.

Ayade, who was visibly delighted with the end product at the final stages of the test run of the factory, expressed the conviction that NAFDAC would give its seal of approval before December.

The governor said, “we are at the Cross River Instant Noodles Factory with the Executive Council of Cross River State to witness the test run production by the concessionaire.

“We want to say we are particularly proud of the concessionaire we have given the factory. Our brand which is Calavita and Kisimie are fully operational and the products will soon be hitting the market.

“l therefore implore every Cross River citizen and Nigerian alike to patronize this fresh noodles produced only from natural ingredients with the spices having their origin from the Nigerian farms and waters.

“We cannot hit the markets until we have a NAFDAC approval. NAFDAC has come here and done all their specification studies and issued us a report, which we are closing out on.

“We have met all their requirements. We are going through our own internal check list and once we are satisfied with our checklist we will ask NAFDAC to come for final inspection,” Ayade said.

The governor disclosed that the state government was seeking partnership with the Nigerian Government’s school feeding program especially with the completion of production at the factory.

He said the partnership with the Nigerian Government would set local manufacturers on the path of prosperity and in the process create employment opportunities, which would positively grow the economy of the state and county.
