In planning for Nigeria’s infrastructure and building sustainable cities for the future, architects and other relevant professionals should among other factors, consider the underprivileged in the society and this is according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
Speaking on the need to have an infrastructure plan that takes care of all strata of society, Prof Osinbajo said and i quote, “it is important that you all as professionals keep the underprivileged members of society in mind as you plan the country’s infrastructure.

GOODWILL REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PROF. YEMI OSINBAJO, SAN, GCON, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA AT THE NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, NATIONAL INTEGRATED MASTERPLAN CONFERENCE HELD AT THE SHEHU MUSA YAR’ADUA CENTRE, ABUJA ON THE 6TH OF OCTOBER, 2022
PROTOCOLS
It is my pleasure to be here today at the inaugural Integrated Infrastructure Research for Development Conference. And the theme, ‘Creating Sustainable World-Class Cities in Nigeria’ is both apt and timely.
We are currently the 7th most populous nation in the world with an estimated population of over 206 million people. This population is projected to rise to 264 million by 2030 and will cross the 300 million threshold around 2036.
It is projected that by 2050, we will have the third-highest population in the world. The majority of this population will live in cities and concurrently increase the size of our towns in ever-expanding dimensions of urban sprawl.
It is estimated that Lagos, for example, will be the 9th most populous city in the world by 2030. In many respects, we are dealing with a rate of population growth and urbanization that is probably unparalleled in history. Compare the population of the UK in 1960, 52million people and now the UK has a population of only 68million people to Nigeria, a population of 45million in 1960 and 206million in 2022.
In the lifetimes of many of us, we have seen Abuja grow from its creation in 1976 with a population of 85,000 to become a sprawling city of 3.6 million people in 2022.
These are the sort of dramatic changes which will challenge our capacity for urban planning and social organization, How do we ensure sustainable urban planning that transforms our cities and growing urban clusters into truly habitable spaces, that are hubs of sustainable growth, that guarantee a high quality of life and enhanced prospects of self-actualization for our people?
Sustainable urban planning must involve planning for the clean energy needs of large numbers of people; from renewable energy for homes and workspaces to providing infrastructure for clean cooking.
And we must ask: what will greater use of electric vehicles and the decommissioning of combustion engine vehicles mean for road and related infrastructure planning in another decade or so? Many of us are probably aware that a lot of the countries that produce combust engine vehicles are looking at decommissioning in another 10-15 years. This means we must start to plan for new types of vehicles otherwise we would have to produce our own vehicles.
We must avoid a scenario of anarchic urbanization in which our urban centres are no more than densely populated and decrepit incubators of destitution and crime. The only real way out is innovative planning.
The case for sustainable cities is obvious. They can invigorate regional economies and catalyze growth on a regional scale. The positive multiplier effects are inestimable – and the benefits are not just economic. New frontiers of opportunity for social engineering with a view to strengthening social cohesion are opened up as we plan sustainable cities.
Indeed, the opportunity to shape the living spaces of millions of people from diverse backgrounds clustering in new cosmopolitan precincts is an exciting one. It is a task that we must embrace with a good measure of strategic intentionality and imagination.
A city cannot be considered world-class if it lacks a vibrant economy driven by qualitative infrastructure, functional social services and efficient urban governance that optimally deliver public goods.
In building our cities, we must deliberately ensure that the benefits of becoming world-class cities accrue not only to wealthy individuals but across all strata of society, across classes and income groups.
This administration’s investments in social housing and other welfare programmes demonstrate our consciousness of the inadequacies that cities across the world face. It is important that you all as professionals keep the underprivileged members of society in mind as you plan the country’s infrastructure. Indeed, I would go so far as to urge you to see infrastructure planning as an opportunity to create a physical environment conducive to social mobility.
The Federal Government has invested significantly in infrastructure. Over the past seven years, we have ensured that the capital expenditure for infrastructure projects is prioritized in the budget. We have embarked upon new projects as well as overseen the completion of ongoing projects.
Our investments in rail, highways, fibre optics, digital penetration, energy pipelines, electricity transmission and distribution lines and renewable energy, are not just about meeting today’s demands; they are the infrastructural arteries that will link tomorrow’s cities and give them the capacity for sustainable growth.
The Government also launched the N15 trillion Infrastructure Corporation (InfraCorp Nigeria) last year, even as the President signed Executive Order 7, which has informed the right policy framework and created additional opportunities for Public Private Partnership (PPP) in infrastructure development.
Towards this end, in 2022 we launched the revised National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (2020-2043) and the National Development Plan (2021-2025). The National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (The Masterplan) is the government’s strategic document, initially developed in 2012, to guide Nigeria’s infrastructure investment, add value to the national economy and enhance private sector participation in infrastructure development. The goal of this Plan is to raise Nigeria’s infrastructure stock to at least 70 percent by the year 2043.
In the first five years of the reviewed Master plan, investments in Energy, Transport, Social Infrastructure and Housing will be prioritised because these are crucial enablers for practically all other sectors.
The reviewed Master Plan and the National Development Plan (2021-2025) also estimate the current nation’s infrastructure stock at 30-35 percent of the GDP in 2020, against 20 percent of GDP recorded in 2015. This is still a far cry from the global practice of 70 percent of GDP but it is for this reason that I am optimistic about the innovation that this conference will ignite.
I am pleased that your discussions will focus on cities, this is as it should be. It is the States that fully control planning and development control, even with respect to Federal land in the States. These conversations must therefore have the States of the Federation as the focal participants.
Earlier this year in the month of June, I received a courtesy visit from the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Architects. Today, I am gratified to see that they have taken up the challenge I posed to them to use their convening power to bring together the professional bodies in the built environment to partner with the Government in the deployment of Infrastructure across the country.
I strongly believe that if there is synergy between all the professionals in this sector, we will see even greater returns on our collective investments in the sector.
It is refreshing to see this collaboration between all the professional associations in the built environment, and the pledge to take ownership of the National Integrated Infrastructure Development Master Plan and the National Development Plan. This is what partnership is about – the Government creates an enabling environment through policy, and the private sector operationalizes the policy goals through its investments.
I congratulate the Nigerian Institute of Architects for taking the leadership role and coordinating the joint effort of all stakeholders and for hosting such a well-planned conference.
Thank you very much for listening and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, flagged off its presidential campaign for the 2023 elections.
The event, held at the Nest of Champions Stadium, Uyo, was attended by party leaders and members across all categories including the party’s presidential candidate, Akitu Abubakar, his running mate, Okowa and host governor, Udom Emmanuel.
Others included governors of Edo, Bayelsa, Taraba, Sokoto, Bauchi, and Adamawa, as well as former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Senate Presidents, Bukola Saraki, and Ayim Pius Ayim, former lawmaker representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye; former governors, members of the National Assembly, among other top party officials.
However, governors Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde and Samuel Ortom of Rivers, Oyo and Benue states respectively, boycotted the campaign flag-off.
But Ikpeazu in a statement on Sunday, restated his support for Atiku, as the presidential candidate of the PDP, reiterating he had nothing against him.
*Atiku: APC beyond May 29 is burden too heavy for Nigerians
*Ikpeazu declares support for former vice-president
Uyo the capital city of Akwa Ibom state , South South Nigeris is agog as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), flag off its presidential campaign in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
On arrival to Uyo, the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, said it would be extra burden too heavy for Nigerians to bear if the APC continued in office after May 29, 2023.
At the same time, one of the governors loyal to the Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, has declared that Atiku was his presidential candidate and had nothing against him.
However, according to the chairman of the Presidential Campaigns Council and Governor of the state, Udom Emmanuel, who signed the letters of invitation, the party extended courtesies to all former presidents produced by the party, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, former vice president, Namadi Sambo to the occasion.
Others invited included former senate presidents David Mark, Pius Anyim Adolphus Wababa, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki as well as all members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party. Expected at the event were all the PDP governors, former governors, former ministers, all former presidential aspirants of the party, all serving and former members of the National Assembly.
Emmanuel, who was on hand to receive delegations at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, expressed delight over the hosting of the campaign flag-off and thanked the leadership of the party for entrusting him and other members of the campaign council with the task of driving the Atiku/Okowa rescue mission. Giving assurances of the Campaign Council’s preparedness for a grand rally to launch the PDP to victory, Emmanuel said, the flag-off promised to be stunning, adding that the outstanding performances by PDP governors had given impetus to the party.
“Let me thank PDP for the confidence they have in us. If you see the whole affairs of the party is piloted by the governors. It’s a whole confidence in us that the party can derive the strength from what the governors are doing in different states. Talking about how prepared we are, rest assured this will be one of the best,” he stated.
On his part, the Vice-Presidential candidate and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was part of those who arrived yesterday, said the campaign kick-off would be an extension of the loudly celebrated 35th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State creation and commencement of PDP’s celebration of the 2023 victory. He described Emmanuel’s chairmanship of the campaign council as special, hence the party’s anticipation of a great and exciting outing.
Similarly, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who was already on ground, lauded Emmanuel’s ingenuity of bringing his private sector capacity, competence, skills and dexterity to bear in managing party and state affairs, thus reaffirming the party’s confidence in his leadership ability.
“We are very pleased and proud of Governor Udom Emmanuel, who is the Chairman of Atiku/Okowa presidential campaign. We couldn’t have made a better choice as a party,” he said, adding that Nigerians would soon come to terms with the correctness in the choice of Okowa from the South-south zone as the vice-presidential candidate of PDP.
But, Atiku in his statement yesterday, said, “I believe that your being here is because we share a common belief that an extra day of the APC administration beyond May 29 next year, will be a burden too heavy for our country to bear.
“You are here because you believe, like I do, that Nigeria deserves a president, who is prepared and ready to lead from day one. You believe that Nigeria needs a UNIFIER and a leadership that leaves no one behind in our march to peace and prosperity.
You are here because you believe that this is the moment that God has designed for this country to rise again. Tomorrow, on 10 October, I shall be joining other leaders of our great party – PDP – to converge on Uyo for the flag-off of our presidential campaign,” he stated.
However, Ikpeazu, on his part, said, “There is no battle between the presidential candidate and I. He is my presidential candidate. I don’t have any other candidate but at times, when one gets to a certain point in life, and a vehicle is put down for a journey, even the destination of the vehicle. That is the question I am asking. I am an apologists of the PDP since 1999 and needed to ask a question.
“The greatest need of Nigerians today is inclusiveness. Can we be sensitive to the feelings of other people? Can I be guaranteed a country where a criminal in Sokoto is a criminal in Abia and a criminal Abia is a criminal in Zamfara? “Can I be guaranteed a country where my son will not be brutalised because his name is Okolie? Can I be”, he asked.
Kyrenia Castle is one of the oldest castles on the island of Cyprus, rebuilt by the Venetians over a previous Crusader fortification, and it is located on the Turkish side of the island of Cyprus.
The Castle dominates the old harbour, and it is the most complete castle on the island.
In Byzantine time, around 7th century, it was mentioned that the castle has been built, so that the town would be protected from Arab raids.
First mentioning of the castle occurs around 1191, when King Richard the Lionheart of England captured it on his way to the Third Crusade.
He did so by defeating Isaac Comnenus, an upstart local governor who had proclaimed himself emperor.
Kyrenia Harbour and Castle
After a short period, Richard sold the island to the Knights Templar, and then to his cousin Guy de Lusignan, the former king of Jerusalem. During this time, the castle played an important role and underwent a lot of changes due to restoration work.
Today what can be seen from the castle is actually the bulk of the rebuilt structure from the Venetians. The main features of the exterior are the round towers built by the Venetians.
As soon as they took over Cyprus, the Venetians feared that the Ottomans, who were on the mainland just a few miles away and rapidly gaining strength, presented a potential challenge to their ownership of the island.
This was a time when warfare was moving away from knights and archers, and gunpowder, cannon and the use of artillery was being developed.
However, in 1570, Kyrenia surrendered to the Ottomans, and they too made changes to the castle, but the British removed these during their occupation. The castle contains the tomb of the Ottoman Admiral Sadik Pasha.
Today you enter the castle via a bridge over a road which was originally part of a moat and used as an inner port till around 1400.
On the left as you enter, you will see a passage leading to the Templar church of St George which has recently been restored.
As you continue up the slope to the parade ground, you will pass the tomb of the Ottoman Admiral, Sadik Pasha, and the parade ground is lined with guard rooms, stables and living quarters.
Ramps lead to the upper sections of the walls, and the views from the top make the climb worthwhile.

The Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria (NBFN) has started programmes aimed at developing the sport in the country.
Rising from a meeting in Lagos on Saturday, the board said it would do everything possible to make kickboxing more attractive to Nigerian youths, adding that one of the ways of growing the sport is by training more coaches and organising more events at the grassroots level.
According to KBFN President, Okon Wilson Godwin, who was recently elected into the executive committee of the African Kickboxing Confederation (AFKC), the board had vivid discussions on various issues affecting the Federation, including the appointment of a technical director.
He added: “As it is now, the Federation does not have a technical director and to us, that is not good if it must move forward as a Federation. We need a technical director right now and the board is working on that as we speak.
“We also reviewed the recently set up sub-committees to have them ratified,” the president said.
Godwin disclosed that the Federation would soon hold two more championships before the end of the year, adding that the previous four championships held back-to-back after the inauguration of the new board this year has encouraged the board to want to do more.
The president promised to use his new position in African kickboxing to promote the sport in the country.
Explaining the delay in holding the meeting, KBFN Secretary General, Mr. Faseesin Olalekan, said the need to accommodate members coming from states outside Lagos made it impossible to hold it earlier.
