Haaland, Foden Hat-Tricks As City Thrash United 6-3

0

Manchester City’s Erling Braut Haaland scores their fifth goal past Manchester United’s David de Gea

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat-tricks to fire champions Manchester City to a rampant 6-3 thrashing of local rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

City put United to the sword in a ruthless display of attacking football in the first half at the Etihad Stadium, as the visitors, who had won their last four leagues games, were blown away by the champions.

Foden got the scoring underway inside eight minutes, sweeping home Bernardo Silva’s low cross, before Haaland headed his first in the 34th minute to put City in command.

Haaland has made a mockery of settling into life in the Premier League and the Norwegian struck again in the 34th minute on the stretch before Foden added the fourth three minutes later.

Big-money signing Antony curled a stunning strike into the net early in the second half to give United faint hope of a remarkable comeback, before Haaland fired home his 17th goal of an incredible season to notch up his third hat-trick in eight Premier League games.

Foden completed his first Premier League treble to finish off the perfect afternoon for irresistible City, before United substitute Anthony Martial added a late consolation double to make the scoreline more respectable.

Pep Guardiola’s side moved to within a point of Arsenal at the top of the standings and a bruised United stayed sixth.

Dominant Ewruje Picks Lekki Scrabble Classics Title

0

James Ewruje

With an unusual smile playing across his face as he held the silver trophy high above his head, James Ewruje on Saturday confirmed his new status as the champion of the newly rebranded Lekki Scrabble Classics.

The Master player claimed the overall title and emerged the best among  the 100 players who competed over 12 games at the one-day tournament.

Ewruje shrugged off the challenges of tournament top favourite Tega Okiemute of Delta State in the last round to cement his pole-position on the log with 11 wins, one defeat and a spread of 599 cumulative points.

The defeat would be costly as Okiemute tumbled to the fourth position at the end.

Ogun State-based Gbadebo Olufemi rallied to second position with 10 wins and two defeats plus 466 cumulative points after a win over a highly impressive Monday Christopher on Table 2 in round 12.

Coming on his heels was Khaleel Adedeji who recorded the same number of wins and defeats but dropped to third position with an inferior cumulative points of 370.

The impressive Dynamite Warriors’ engine room also revved up to snatch the intermediate category title.

Other players in the top 20 which included former African champion Jimoh Saheed, John Aiyedun and Opeyemi Oloro recieved various cash prizes for their efforts.

In other spot prizes won, Bukunmi Afolayan picked the Best Female title while Philip Akhabue was rewarded with a complete scrabble kit as the youngest player.

David Ogedengbe got a surprise cash gift from the organisers for putting on a green and white shirt in commemoration of the 62nd Independence Day Anniversary.

Speaking at the tournament which was held in an atmosphere of conviviality, a trademark of the club’s events, Captain of Lekki Scrabble Club Ebikeme Adowei said the Lekki Scrabble Classics was able to tick some critical boxes due to the quality of minds who share the same vision with one another at the club.

“We are all commonly bonded in our passion for scrabble” he confessed, “and so we decided to have this periodic event, which is a bi-annual event so that we can gather the creme-de-la creme of scrabble in Nigeria to compete, have fun and win prizes.”

“I’m glad we have this level of competition to offer scrabble players and we hope to sustain this. We are hoping that corporate organisations will key into this initiative to grow the game of scrabble not only football,  basketball but mental sports like scrabble and chess.”

South-West Zonal Coordinator of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) Emmanuel Egbele who incidentally is a member of the club said the tournament has met his expectations considering the huge number of players, the ambience, the high level of competition and friendly feeling amongst the players.

He said the Classics has impacted on the players’ mind skills as they prepare for the National Sports Festival and the Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) taking place in Lusaka, Zambia this month.

Lagos State Scrabble and  Monopoly Association  Chairman  Engr. Dipo Akanbi said the Lekki Scrabble Classics has become a kind of Mecca for players around the country due to the offerings available.

He said the open nature of the event was critical in solidifying the sports as newbies will tend to play the more established players in all categories.

He highlighted the strategic role the LSC as a competition has played in preparing some of the players who will represent the country at the Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) in Zambia this month.

In the same vein, NSF Players Representative, Segun Durojaiye said the tournament’s role in the development of players cannot be over emphasised.

He observed that the open status of the tournament has been a training ground for the younger ones as well as those who have been out of the circuit for sometime to get back in the game including students who have been at home due to the prolonged strike by the Association  Staff Union of University (ASUU) to get involved after studying for a long period of time.

He added that high number of entries in Lagos as well as the plenty players who registered for the Abuja National Opens which was held simultaneously, signified that the growth of the sports was not abating.

Both tournaments served as testing grounds for some of the players who will be in Lagos for Finale Matchday of the Mindgames Scrabble Premier League and the Patrons Cup.

The Lekki Scrabble Classics had players from different clubs from Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, Delta and Niger States who participated at the successful event.

Exploring The 16th Century Manor House, Casa de la Vall, Andorra

0

Casa de la Vall is a historical and very important house which is located in the capital city of the Principality of Andorra, Andorra la Vella.

Due to its location in the main center of the city, the house is one of the main focal points for visitors in the small nation where everyone will be able to understand the remarkable history and solid institutional basis of the Principality.

Casa de la Vall was built in 1580 on a rock that is overlooking the valley of Valira River, and it was used as a manor house for the wealthy Busquets family, in addition to the defense tower located right next to it.

The rectangular shape of the building which is completely built from stone is a perfect example of how the architecture from Andorra looks like, as it was the case of such structures built from wealthy Catalan families.

There are two floors, and at the southern lateral part, on each side of the building’s corners two turrets can be seen, gracefully projecting defensive position for a better protection of the house. At the front side of the building, where the entrance door is located, is the Busquets family crest along with the coat of arms of Andorra .

This graceful gorgeous structure belonged to the rich family up until 1702 when it was acquired by the oldest and most continuous parliaments in Europe that runs from 1419, “Consell General”, sometimes referred to as “Consell de la Terra”, but better known as the Parliament of Andorra.

Throughout the years, there were no significant maintenance work carried out to the building, which made the government in 1950s to make the first improvements, and in 1962 to refurbish completely the entire structure so that it would be a fully parliamentary space.

The architect from Barcelona, Joaquim Ros de Ramis was commissioned to organize everything in order to make Casa de la Vall more presentable.

The main improvement was the removal of the exterior plastering and adding an embrasure on the principal façade so that a nice symmetry would be given to it, furthermore the re-organization of windows and shutters, in addition to the extension of the eaves of the slate roof, and most importantly, the proper assembly room for the Parliamentarians.

The assembly room is the actual nerve center of the building that has been used for a very long time, nonetheless, the portraits of the co-princes of the principality, the Bishop of Urgell and the President of the French Republic, are always put in a very prominent position.

The Parliament of Andorra occupied Casa de la Vall until 2011, when the new building located right next to Casa de la Vall was built in 2011, and since then the house is used mainly as a great attraction and very important historic monument.

Nowadays, despite the newly built building, the house is still used as the historic headquarters of the General Council of Andorra, where Casa de la Vall is certainly one of the greatest treasures with which the tiny principality in the Iberian Mountains can be proud of.

South Korea: Electricity Rate To Jump By 16%

0

From Saturday, households in South Korea will have to pay more to use electricity.

The Korea Electric Power Corporation, or KEPCO announced that the electricity rates will rise by 2.5 Korean won per kilowatt hour in the fourth quarter.

Previously, the government announced an additional 4.9 won increase for October, so in total, the electricity rate will jump by 7.4 won.

This means bills will go up by around 2,270 won or 1.6 U.S. dollars a month, on average for a four-person household.

Businesses that use large amounts of electricity will be charged more, depending on the voltage.

Authorities say the hike comes following a sharp rise in global energy prices, but added that they plan on normalizing the rates in stages next year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has also announced rate hikes for gas.

Gas is currently 16.99 won per megajoule.

But the rate will increase by almost 16-percent, or 2.7 won per megajoule, starting October.

This means the monthly average for households will rise by 5,400 won or nearly four U.S dollars.

For businesses with moderate energy consumption like restaurants, hairdressers, and lodging facilities, rates will jump by 16.4 percent.

Rates for businesses that require more gas use like public baths will increase by over 17 percent.

This is a big hike considering that rates were increased by single digits last quarter.

The ministry explained that this was caused by soaring international gas prices as well as the weakening of the Korean currency against the greenback.

Nigeria Air Contemplates Buying China’s Newly Certified C919 Passenger Jet

0

Nigeria would consider buying China’s newly certified C919 passenger jet as it grows the country’s fledgling carrier Nigeria Air to 30 planes by around 2025, Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika said on Saturday.

Sirika said the new airline would have a mixture of Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) planes, but added the carrier is also willing to look at the Chinese narrowbody jet, which Chinese regulators certified on Friday.

“We haven’t looked at that C919. But if it’s as good as the others then why not,” he told newsmen on the sidelines of the United Nation’s aviation agency’s triennial assembly in Montreal, Canada.

On Friday, China hailed the development of its first medium-haul passenger jet as the embodiment of the country’s drive towards self-sufficiency, with safety approval awarded to a plane that aims to challenge Western aircraft giants for orders.

The first C919 aircraft, designed to compete with popular single-aisle models made by Airbus and Boeing, will be delivered by the end of the year, state Xinhua News Agency said.

It remains unclear when the plane might be certified by the United States or Europe, opening the way to sales in most foreign markets, but industry analysts say it will be up to a decade before China can seriously tackle the existing Boeing-Airbus duopoly.

“China and Nigeria (have a) very cordial and friendly relationship with mutual benefits,” Sirika said.

For decades, China has loaned billions of dollars to Africa to build railroads, power plants and highways as it deepened ties with the continent while extracting minerals and oil.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, is the top importer of Chinese goods, hoovering up $23 billion worth in 2021.

Shiny, Sparkly Object Seen In James Webb Space Image

0

Astronomers have made a sparkling discovery in what was the very first full-colour image released from the new super space telescope James Webb.

The picture, presented to the world in July by US President Joe Biden, shows a fantastically deep view of the cosmos, billions of years into the past.

And it’s in that remarkable vista that researchers have now picked out what they believe to be the most distant globular clusters ever identified.

Globulars are dense star collections.

What’s more, these stars are generally really quite old and relatively pristine: they have fewer of the heavier chemical elements that taint more modern stars such as our Sun.

Our Milky Way Galaxy, in which our Sun lives, has more than 100 of these compact groupings littered around itself, but when and how they formed is still something of a puzzle.

The Biden Webb image should improve our understanding.
