FIFA President, Infantino Meets With Okonjo-Iwuala

0

At the sidelines of the 77th  United Nations General Assembly, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Nigeria’s Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iwuala who is the Director General of World Trade Organisation.

According to FIFA website, both held discussions on a range of topics. Football’s role in unlocking global economic growth potential was among the topics on the agenda at the meeting.

They held discussion about the economic impact of football – and its role in unlocking global economic growth potential.

The FIFA World Cup is the main driver of FIFA’s income and therefore global investment source, which it distributes via the FIFA Forward programme.

By the end of 2022, since its inception in 2016, almost USD 3 billion will have been invested globally through FIFA Forward.

Through FIFA Forward, FIFA offers tailor-made support for football development to create more investment opportunities, more oversight, more impact and ultimately, more growth. President Infantino provided an update on a number of FIFA Forward projects.

The subjects of the continued enhancement of women’s economic empowerment – and the role that football can play within that process – and FIFA’s role within the global sustainability movement, were also of keen interest to both parties and were discussed.

The WTO regulates and facilitates international trade and is the world’s largest international economic organisation. It has 164 member states, representing over 98 per cent of global trade and global GDP.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Stadium Preview – Al Thumama Stadium, Doha, Qatar – September 22, 2022 General view inside the stadium ahead of the World Cup

When the World Cup kicks off in Qatar on Nov. 20 fans can expect a flurry of stats and match footage on social media and FIFA is hoping that includes data and content from a new player app.

FIFA said on Friday that all players at the finals will be able to browse their performance data on a purpose-built app developed by the governing body which allow footballers of all 32 teams access to analysis and information.

The app has been created after feedback from players, through the players union FIFPRO, and the data will be synched with video of the action to allow quick assessment of key moments.

While such data and metrics are widely available to players with the top clubs and national sides, who employ teams of analysts, the app will ensure squads with fewer resources also have access.

The app will make use of input from FIFA’s performance analysts, tracking data and physical performance metrics such as distance covered, sprints and positional heat maps.

Players will also be provided with photographs from the matches which they can share on social media along with stats and data.

“This player-centric development is based on direct feedback from the players and is another great example of how FIFA is using technology to the best of its potential by improving the football experience for the key actors on the pitch,” said Johannes Holzmueller, FIFA Director of Football Technology & Innovation

Simon Colosimo, FIFPRO Deputy General Secretary, said players had asked for better access to their performance data.

“The FIFA Player App is a positive outcome that will activate personal data rights and provide a new resource for players at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar,” he said.

Federer To Bow Out In Style With Nadal By His Side

0

Laver Cup – Media Day – 02 Arena, London, Britain – September 22, 2022 Team Europe’s Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal during practice Action

Some of the most iconic moments of Roger Federer’s glittering career featured Rafa Nadal across the net but on Friday his great Spanish rival will be alongside him for his final bow.

The 41-year-old Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam titles and for many the greatest player to wield a tennis racket, is back in one of his favourite cities to bring down the curtain on a 24-year professional career that scaled staggering heights.

He will partner Nadal for a doubles match on the opening day of the Laver Cup at London’s O2 Arena — a three-day team event in which Europe takes on the Rest of the World.

Federer announced last week that the Laver Cup would be his final competitive event having failed to overcome a nagging right knee issue that required multiple surgeries.

While that injury means he is unable to feature in a singles match here in London, he will conclude the opening day alongside men’s record 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal as they face American duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

As farewells go, it simply could not be better.

Federer played Nadal 40 times in one of the most compelling rivalries witnessed in tennis.

Who could forget their 2008 Wimbledon final when Nadal denied Federer a sixth consecutive title, the time Federer cried following defeat in a brutal 2009 Australian Open final, or the 2017 Australian Open final when Federer ended a five-year wait for his 18th major title by defeating Nadal in a classic.

No quarter has ever been given on the court but despite the ferocity of their duels, deep respect endures.

Which is why Federer said earlier this week that playing with Nadal would be a beautiful way to conclude a career that caught fire when he claimed his first Grand slam title in 2003 by winning Wimbledon.

Europe’s captain Bjorn Borg, not surprisingly, granted him his wish.

“It’s going to be a different kind of pressure to be part of this historic moment,” Nadal told reporters.

“It’s going to be something amazing and unforgettable for me. I’m super excited. maybe we can create a good moment and maybe win the match.”

Federer cut a relaxed figure as he sat with his team mates, including 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and twice Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

But he said the emotions could hit him on Friday.

“I’m not sure if I can handle (all the emotions) but I will try,” Federer, whose presence had fans flocking to watch practice sessions on Thursday, told reporters.

“This one feels a whole lot different. It’s super special playing with Rafa. “Feels very different you know.”

Nadal was asked to highlight some of his best moments against Federer, not surprisingly picking the 2008 Wimbledon final as one of his most cherished.

He also spoke warmly of their enduring friendship.

“I think we are very proud it’s been a friendly rivalry,” said Nadal, who beat Federer in six Grand Slam finals.

“Not easy because we are playing for such important things for our tennis careers, but at the same time we were able to understand that personal relationships are more important than sometimes professional things.

“Tomorrow is going to be special thing.”

Rest of the World captain John McEnroe said there had been some “coin flicking” to see who would face Nadal and Federer in Friday’s doubles — saying that whatever the result of the match it would be a magical night for tennis.

“It’s a very unique situation that we are all fortunate enough to be around,” McEnroe said. “This is like an incredible moment for our sport.

Sock said he was stoked to be part of an iconic night while Tiafoe, who reached the U.S. Open semi-finals, added: “I’m just excited to play two up-and-comers!

“Both guys are absolute legends, and obviously it’s Roger’s last dance.”

Sock opens play in Friday’s first singles against U.S. Open runner-up Casper Ruud while Murray is the evening warm up act against Alex de Minaur.

Countries Create Jobs In Renewables, Hit 12.7m Globally

2

Worldwide employment in renewable energy reached 12.7 million last year, a jump of 700,000 new jobs in one year, according to a new report.

“Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2022” identifies domestic market size as a major factor influencing employment generation in renewables, along with labour and other costs. Solar energy was found to be the fastest-growing sector. In 2021 it provided 4.3 million jobs, more than a third of the current global workforce in renewable energy.

The new report was published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), during the Global Clean Energy Action Forum in Pittsburgh, USA.

The report shows that an increasing number of countries are creating jobs in renewables.

Almost two-thirds of all these jobs are in Asia. China alone accounts for 42 per cent of the global total, followed by the EU and Brazil with ten per cent each, and the USA and India with seven per cent each.

The report highlights some notable regional and national developments. These include Southeast Asian countries becoming major solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing hubs and biofuel producers.

China is the pre-eminent manufacturer and installer of solar PV panels and is creating a growing number of jobs in offshore wind.

India added more than 10 Gigawatts of solar PV, generating many installation jobs, but remains heavily dependent on imported panels.

Europe now accounts for about 40 per cent of the world’s wind manufacturing output and is the most important exporter of wind power equipment; it is trying to reconstitute its solar PV manufacturing industry.

Africa’s role is still limited, but the report points out that there are growing job opportunities in decentralised renewables, especially in support of local commerce, agriculture, and other economic activities.

Oil Theft: Nigerian Government Engages Host Communities, Security Agencies, Deploys Technology

0

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, says there are about 265 illegal refineries in the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) corridor alone as Nigeria continues to grapple with oil theft.

Sylva spoke at the 60th Anniversary of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Thursday, September 22, 2022, in Lagos.

The minister, represented by Mr Kamaru Busari, Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, said vandalism and oil theft had resulted in Nigeria producing less than one million barrels of crude oil per day.

Sylva said the country’s inability to meet its Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota had deprived it of the much needed oil revenue when oil prices were very high in the international market.

He said, nevertheless, the government was engaging host communities, security agencies and deploying technology to address the issue in order to boost investors’ confidence in the sector.

On his part, Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL), said the company was not unmindful of the current challenges, particularly security in the operational areas and cash call arrears settlement.

Kyari, represented by Mr Dapo Segun, Deputy General Manager, Treasury, NNPCL, however, maintained that the company was resilient and would work with other stakeholders to overcome the security challenges.

He said: “We have deployed creative solutions to tackle security challenges in the operational areas.

“Technological intervention for both monitoring and prompt intervention would also be set up. The tackling of the menace is a top priority for NNPCL.

“Also, our new governance framework provides us autonomy and opportunity for self-accounting hence cash-call settlement including arrears would be settled and handled promptly going forward.”

Earlier in his address of welcome, Mr Rick Kennedy, Chairman OPTS, said OPTS had made significant contributions to the development of the Nigerian oil and gas industry over the past 60 years.

Kennedy, represented by Mr Osagie Okunbor, Vice Chairman, OPTS, said OPTS members had demonstrated resilience and commitment in the face of economic, security, environmental and funding challenges.

He said: “We have continued to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.

“As a group, OPTS member companies account about 90 per cent of Nigeria oil production and contributes significantly to the domestic and export gas production and supply.

“Over the last decade, OPTS member companies accounted for 40-60 per cent of government revenue and 85 to 95 per cent of export earnings.

“OPTS member companies are also proud to have paid tens of billions of dollars in taxes, levies, royalties, rents, and license fees to the Nigerian government.”

Kennedy, who is also the Managing Director, Chevron Nigeria/Mid-Africa Business Unit, said the OPTS companies had also created over 600,000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians.

Also, Mr Bunmi Toyobo, Executive Director, OPTS, thanked the 29 companies who were members of the OPTS for their contributions to its achievements in the past 60 years.

“This celebration is to demonstrate our abiding faith in Nigeria as a group and belief in the boundless growth potential of our country, given the enabling environment,” he said.

Africa Emits Less Than 1% Of Global Carbon – Nigeria’s V.P. Osinbajo

0

Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo says African countries account for less than one per cent of cumulative global carbon emissions.

Osinbajo disclosed this in his keynote address at the 60th Anniversary Dinner of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Thursday, September 22, 2022, in Lagos.

The OPTS is a subgroup of LCCI, which is the umbrella association of oil and gas companies who have come together to promote their common interests.

Osinbajo, who spoke on the topic: “Nigeria Transitioning to Green Energy”, said that most hostile impacts of climate change on the continent were triggered by activities of wealthier nations.

The vice president said that most countries including Nigeria agreed that there was need to reduce global emissions to zero in Nigeria’s case by 2060.

“We are major victims of the effects of climate change, but there are a few important issues that we have flagged to our wealthier brother-countries in the global north.

“The first is that we, in the developing world are faced with two, not one crisis; one is climate change and the other is extreme poverty, the cause and consequence of which is energy poverty.

“Or the fact that lack of access to electricity for millions is a cause of deepening poverty.

“The second is that African countries are the least emitters of carbon today – less than one per cent of cumulative CO2 emissions and even if we triple electricity consumption in African countries (aside from South Africa) solely using natural gas this would add just 0.6 per cent to global emissions.

“So, a lot of the flooding and adverse weather events that we are experiencing here are from emissions caused by the wealthier countries.’’

The vice president said thirdly, the defunding of gas projects to force gas rich countries like Nigeria to stop using gas and use renewables instead was faulty.

According to him, the proposals to ban the funding of fossil fuel projects make no distinction between upstream oil and coal exploration and gas power plants for grid balancing.

He said that no economy in the world had been known to use renewables solely to industrialise as solar power simply did not have the base load capacity yet for industry.

“Fourthly, stopping the use of gas means that we cannot use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for clean cooking stoves to replace the use of kerosene, firewood and charcoal which are dirtier fuels that are widely used for cooking and other domestic purposes, particularly in the rural areas.

“The use of firewood means cutting down trees and of course desertification and then the loss of our carbon sinks.

“The fifth is the double standards that wealthier countries have adopted on this issue.

“Today in the wake of the energy crisis, many European nations have made recent announcements to increase or extend their use of coal fired power generation through 2023, and potentially beyond.

“This is in violation of their climate commitments, and analysis suggests that this will raise power sector emissions of the EU by 4 per cent – a significant amount given the high base denominator of EU emissions.’’

Osinbajo said that the sixth and perhaps most crucial point was that Nigeria must take quick and informed actions in its national interest.

He said that the country must take the threat of no investments in fossil fuels including gas seriously.

“For an example, many European and other global North countries are setting aggressive targets for use of electric vehicles and the banning of combustion engine vehicles.

“Soon there may be only a few countries using combustion engines; it is also evident that while the Russia- Ukrainian war has shown the hypocrisy in not allowing public funding for fossil fuel projects, the wealthier nations are still of the view that this is the correct policy and that even if public funding is to be allowed financing should not go beyond 2035.

“So far, our response has been the Energy Transition Plan – a comprehensive, data-driven and evidence-based plan, designed to deal with the twin crises of climate change and energy poverty.

“We anchored the plan on key objectives, including lifting 100 million people out of poverty in a decade, driving economic growth, bringing modern energy services to the full population and managing the expected long-term job loss in the oil sector due to global decarbonisation,’’  he said.

He said that the plan recognised the role natural gas must play in the short term to facilitate the establishment of base load energy capacity and address the nation’s clean cooking deficit in the form of LPG.

The vice president urged the private sector to step up its participation in the transition to green energy journey.

0

The management of Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State said, it has received medical equipment worth N200 million, donated by an alumnus of the polytechnic, Dr. Adetokunbo Ogunfemi.

The Chairman, Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Dr. Veronica Ogbuagu, made this known at a press briefing after receiving the donation from one of the alumni.

She commended the donor for his kind gesture to the institution and noted that the polytechnic would optimise the equipment.

The equipment which comprises 12 microscopes, an osmometer, a blood sugar machine, sample tools for blood collection, disk incubators, protective jackets with gears, and others has been taken to the medical centre.

She said, “We are indeed grateful and the institution will put it to maximum use.”

Dr. Ogunfemi, a medical scientist and lecturer at a university in London, stated that the instrument would allow students to gain practical knowledge.

He also advised that the students should have access to medical treatment, adding that the locals can as well benefit from the treatment.

The alumnus, who graduated from the school in 1985/86, however, appealed to the school authority to make the equipment accessible, and offer free treatment to the students and members of the community.

Exploring Fortaleza Canyon, Brazil

0

Fortaleza Canyon is a vast and quite grandiose canyon that is part of the Serra Geral National Park, which is part of the Municipality of Cambará do Sul, in the northeastern part of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, within the southern par f the Federative Republic of Brazil.

Considered to be one of the most difficult canyons to be reached, not just in Brazil, but in the entire world as well, the canyon always captivates all those who manage to come and see this magnificent natural feature from Brazil.

With walls that are up to 900 meters (2,952 feet) in height, and length of about 7.5 km (5 mi), Fortaleza Canyon is most likely one of the greatest natural features that can be seen in this world.

Even though difficult to be reached, there are two hiking trails that lead to this place, Pedra do Segredo Trail and Trilha do Mirante Trail.

The usual hike time is 2 hours each way for both trails, where Pedra do Segredo takes visitors to the beginning of the canyon, from where the cascading Tigre Preto Waterfall can be seen falling down in four different cascades with estimated height of some 1,000 meters (3,281 feet).

The other trail, Trilha do Mirante, is even better trail which leads to the end of the Fortaleza Canyon where visitors are awarded with a panoramic view of the grandiose canyon walls.

After all, the width between the walls of the canyon is staggeringly 2 km (1.24 mi) wide, and this amazing work of nature has the highest point of 1,240 meters (4,068 feet) above sea level.

Serra Geral National Park was formed as such in 1992 with an area of about 17,300 hectares (4,2749 acres), centering it over the grand Fortaleza Canyon, however, it includes also Malacara, Churriado, Josafaz, Coroados Indians, Molha Coco, Leão, Pés de Galinha , Bonecas and Macuco, which fit into this landscape consisting of 63 gigantic cliffs.

The best time to visit this marvelous place is throughout the entire year, since the scenery will captivate everyone that reaches the “promised land” of tall canyon walls, however, if visited in winter time, visitors must be always cautious since this is the rainy period that could be considered a little bit dangerous than usual.

All in all, Fortaleza Canyon is not well known place in the big, wide Brazil, however, it guarantees that everyone who dares to visit this mysterious place will definitely won’t feel disappointed by the landscape.
