Lmc: Police Seal League Organisers’ Office

0

Just a few days after the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development declared League Management Company (LMC) illegal, the Nigerian Police Force sealed off the office of the league body.

Five truckloads of policemen early yesterday morning took over the office at No 20, Osun Crescent, Off IBB Way, Maitama, Abuja.

Recall last week that the government disbanded the LMC on the grounds that it is illegal and not known to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Statutes.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Ismaila Abubakar, had last Friday announced the withdrawal of the government’s recognition of the LMC.

He had explained that the decision was taken given the several unpleasant incidents regarding the management of the football league. The NFF have been directed to set up an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to run the league pending the time the clubs will run it themselves.

The FGN is set to open a probe of the LMC operations in the past 10 years.

In a response to the Ministry’s statement, LMC, also on Tuesday via its Twitter handle, insisted that the league body has legal backing in the Football laws and regulations which are constituted in both the NFF and FIFA, including the corporate laws.

Pakistani Industry And Production Ministry Highlights Importance Of Promoting Marble Exports

0

Federal Minister for Industry and Production, Syed Murtaza Mahmud on has highlighted the importance of promoting marble exports, which are currently far behind their existing potential.

Addressing a seminar on “Marble and Granite Sector Development on International Standards” the federal minister said currently the marble exports stand at $37 million, which should reach to at least $ 337 million.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Islamabad Chamber and Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and Pakistan Stone Development Company (PASDEC).

He assured the business community that their issues related to marble and granite sector would be resolved. The minister said, Pakistan possesses huge reserves of stones having rare colures which make the country’s marble and granite one of the most promising sectors of economy.

He said that majority of the export of this sector were in raw form so there was need to work for producing finishing products for domestic consumption and exports.

He was of the view that the country could not achieve sustainable growth because Small Medium Enterprises (SMES) was ignored over the years and respective governments had focused on Large Scale Manufacturing Industry (LSMI).

Murtaza said that government would facilitate the private sector and work closely with it for promotion of this particular sector.

Speaking on the occasion, President ICCI, Muhammad Shakeel Munir said that Pakistan has huge marble and granite deposits. He said the monthly production has reached to 6000 ton per month however, there was excessive local demand that has been impeding exports.

He said, there were around 2000 processing units working across the country, with every city having a marble factory, so we need to take productive measures to improve exports.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) PASDEC, Babar Miraj Shami said around 75 stones were extracted from 1400 quarries adding that the stone extracted from the country has huge demand due to color, texture and quality.

London Fashion Week Begins With Tributes To Queen Elizabeth

From an all-black opening look to a model holding a photo of Queen Elizabeth II, London Fashion Week celebrated the late Queen as fashionistas paid their respects during a period of national mourning.

Organizers announced last week that London Fashion Week will be held as a “business-to-business event” while honoring royal protocol and honoring the Queen, who died at 96 on September 8.

The party has been postponed and the show for Monday, the day of the Queen’s state funeral, has been rescheduled.

Big brands like Burberry and Raf Simons, one of the most anticipated highlights of the season, pulled out of the Sept. 16-20 event, but that’s hard to do for smaller brands. That’s it.

“Therefore, the shows and presentations, the business-to-business part where designers present their collections to international media, retailers and stylists, are part of the global fashion calendar. It cannot be moved,” says Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, told newsmen.

“London is an incredibly creative business, a platform for a lot of independent businesses and they are already committed to spending, so we need to make sure we are supporting them so they can continue.”

Among the planned tributes will include a book of condolences from the fashion industry shared with the royal family, with fashionistas in front of Christopher Kane on Sunday night at 8pm (1900 GMT). Participate in a moment of national reflection (one minute of silence).

On Thursday night, designer Daniel W. Fletcher held a minute’s silence before sending out the first models in black suits and black armbands.

Fletcher told London’s Evening Standard newspaper, “In launching the event, I thought it was important to commemorate the moment.

Spanish sustainable brand SoHuman closed Friday’s show with models. Their eye makeup was smeared as if they were crying, they held a picture of Elizabeth in their hands, and drew a picture of a crown or “RIP” on their hands.

Designer Javier Aparici’s colorful collection consisted of dresses in bold colors and floral prints.

ASUU Strike: Court Adjourns Case To September 19

0

The National Industrial Court has adjourned the suit filed by the Federal Government challenging the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to Monday, September 19 for a hearing of the interlocutory application of the Federal Government.

At the resumed sitting on Friday, counsel to the Federal Government, James Igwe, asked the court to give the suit an accelerated hearing due to the urgency of the matter to enable the students to return to school.

Igwe told the court that since the matter was already in court, it would be proper for the strike to be called off pending the determination of the suit.

Counsel to ASUU, Femi Falana, argued that the matter was adjourned to Friday for further mention and not for hearing. He said he has been served with the Federal Government’s Interlocutory injunction.

Falana added that ASUU is currently meeting with stakeholders to ensure that this lingering crisis is resolved. He appealed to the Federal Government to cooperate with them to resolve the issue.

Justice Polycarp Hamman, subsequently adjourned the suit to Monday 19, 2022

Amtrak Working To Restore Canceled Trains In The U.S.

Amtrak says it is working to quickly restore canceled trains after President Joe Biden announced that a tentative railway labor agreement has been reached.

Amtrak said Thursday that it is reaching out to impacted customers to accommodate on first available departures.

Amtrak had canceled a number of its long-distance trains this week as a potential strike loomed.

A strike would have disrupted passenger traffic as well as freight rail lines, because Amtrak and many commuter railroads operate on tracks owned by the freight railroads.

Railroads and union representatives had been in negotiations for 20 hours at the Labor Department on Wednesday to hammer out a deal, as there was a risk of a strike starting on Friday that could have shut down rail lines across the country.

The tentative agreement will go to union members for a vote after a post-ratification cooling off period of several weeks.

Federer’s Retirement ‘Sad Day’ For Sport – Nadal

Roger Federer’s decision to retire from tennis is a “sad day” for sport, his great rival Rafael Nadal has said.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, announced on Thursday that he would retire after the lever cup  this month.

Only Spain’s Nadal, with 22 majors, and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, with 21, have more men’s Grand Slam singles titles than the 41-year-old.

“Dear Roger, my friend and rival. I wish this day would have never come,” Nadal posted on social media.

“It’s a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world.”

Nadal defeated Federer 24 times in 40 matches during one of the most celebrated rivalries in tennis history.

“It’s been a pleasure but also an honour and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court,” Nadal said.

“We will have many more moments to share together in the future, there are still lots of things to do together, we know that.

“For now, I truly wish you all the happiness with your wife, Mirka, your kids, your family and enjoy what’s ahead of you. I’ll see you in London.”

Federer made his professional debut aged 16 in 1998 and won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003.

The chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Ian Hewitt, congratulated Federer on a “truly remarkable career”.

“He will forever be celebrated as one of our greatest Wimbledon champions, having lifted the trophy eight times from his 22 appearances at the All England Club,” Hewitt added.

Billie Jean King, a 12-time Grand Slam winner, said Federer is a “champion’s champion”.

“He has the most complete game of his generation and captured the hearts of sports fans around the world with an amazing quickness on the court and a powerful tennis mind,” she tweeted.

Former world number one Rod Laver also wrote on Twitter: “Thank you for everything Roger. See you soon.”

Eighteen-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Navratilova said of Federer’s announcement: “What a heartfelt message, full of love, life, hope, passion and gratitude. Which is exactly how Roger played the game we love so much. Thank you, thank you thank you, for all the magic!”

ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said: “He spearheaded an incredible new era of growth and elevated the popularity of our sport. Few athletes have transcended their field in such a manner.”

Former British number one Annabel Croft told BBC Radio 5 Live: “When I think of Roger Federer, I think of his grace, his fluidity, his beauty, the way he played tennis.

“What a great icon for the sport, he sort of transcended it.

“He was also someone who was incredibly strong mentally. For most of the matches he played he had a massive big target on his back. But he seemed to enjoy and relish [being] under pressure.”

US Open champion and men’s world number one Carlos Alcaraz tweeted that Federer “has been one of my idols and a source of inspiration”, while the highest ranked female player, Iga Swiatek, thanked Federer for everything he had done for the sport of tennis.

Former Swiss Davis Cup captain Claudio Mezzadri referred to Federer as “much more than just a tennis player”.

“It’s an unbelievable career, he played for 24 years. He played more than 1,500 matches. It’s something impossible to think. He was such a nice guy, he was great to watch with the elegance and style he had, and still has, but he also was a great man outside the court,” Mezzadri told BBC Radio 5 Live.

ASUU Strike: Gov Wike Faults Uncommitted Leaders

0

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike says the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is the result of electing leaders who are not committed to problem solving.

While it is acknowledged that the problem that led to the strike was cumulative, he claims that proper negotiations should have been able to resolve the dispute.

The former Minister of State for Education, however, urged ASUU to reconsider some demands as no administration can pay out the huge sum being demanded by the union at a go, with the present economic realities.

Wike was speaking during the signing of three bills into law at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Queen Elizabeth II: Portrait Centre-Stage In Coventry Driveway Art Gallery

A huge portrait of the Queen created during the pandemic has gone on display on the artist’s driveway near Coventry.

Lorraine Douglas only took up painting during the first lockdown, but produced canvases featuring the likes of the monarch and Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Her eight-foot-tall portrait of the Queen raised thousands of pounds for charity and visited Buckingham Palace.

Douglas said it was “a complete honour” to exhibit the portrait next to one of the Duke of Edinburgh.

They feature centre-stage in a street gallery on her driveway in Allesley, Warwickshire.

Douglas, who lives with chronic pain, said she used art as a way to get her through nights when she was unable to sleep.

“I have a few health conditions and struggled during the lockdowns, I needed to keep my mind active and wanted to do something that could help others,” she said in an interview.

She said the canvases of the Queen and Prince Philip were “painted with my heart and the limited abilities that I have”.

“It felt quite deep painting the portraits, I got lost in the process and thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said.

The artworks have helped to raise £10,000 for local charity Zoe’s Place, a hospice for babies and infants.

The artist has now been asked to make some souvenirs featuring her portraits.

Donations from the sales will go to the Bliss neonatal charity.
