Amusan Pleased To Silence Doubters

0

Reigning Commonwealth and World 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan, is confident that her second Diamond League trophy triumph will silence her doubters

The 25-year-old set a meet record of 12.29secs to win the women’s 100m hurdles in Zurich and won $30,000 on Thursday.

Amusan finished ahead of Tia Jones (12.40secs) who placed second and Brittany Anderson in third with a time of 12.42secs.

Her victory shattered Gail Devers’ 22-year-old 12.33secs meet record set in 2000.

Her time was the second fastest legal time ever over the hurdles after the 12.12secs world record she posted in July at the World Championships in Oregon, USA.

In a video posted on Twitter by the World Athletics, Amusan said, “Everyone has doubted me. I just had to prove myself, that I have got it. I am just so thankful for all of this season. I am full of emotions. Now, vacation, rest, and then back to practice.

“I was scared to the teeth getting on that line, but you know, I just had to keep my calm… then yes, its show time! I’m just thankful to have come out here and get the win.”

Amusan said that there was no pressure, that she just felt the need to prove to herself that breaking the World record in Oregon wasn’t a fluke.

“There is no pressure; it was more of proving to myself that I broke the World record and I can do it over and over, it’s not just a one-time thing.

“Even though after the World Championships, it took a toll on me to get back into my rhythm, but with enough rest, I was able to bounce back, and I’m thankful.”

Amusan’s feat in Lusanne has seen her successfully defended four titles this year.

She started the year by retaining her African Championships title in Mauritius back in June, before traveling to Paris to smash her 12.42secs African record with a time of 12.41secs at the Diamond League meeting in Paris.

Then she ran 12.41secs at the Diamond League meeting in Paris, before storming Benin City, Edo State to erase the 12.63secs Nigerian Championships record set in 1997 by Angela Atede in Lagos.

The reigning African champion ran 12.58secs to add the championships record to her collections, before going to the biggest stage in world athletics to achieve legendary status.

The Utep graduate also produced one of the biggest surprises of the World Championships when she sped to a world record of 12.12secs in the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles, following it with a wind-assisted 12.06secs in the final to win gold.

The Nigerian went on to win the Commonwealth Games title with a Games record 12.30secs and in the process became the first Nigerian track and field athlete to successfully defend an individual title at the Games.

Usyk Offers To Help Joshua Against Fury

0

Anthony Joshua has been tipped to face WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in an all-British heavyweight match in December and former opponent Oleksandr Usyk has offered to help Joshua train for the fight against Fury.

The fight is expected to take place at the end of this year, with the undefeated Fury set to go into the bout as the overwhelming favourite to claim the spoils against his long-time rival.

WBA, WBO, IBO and IBF champion Usyk offered his services to Joshua ahead of the fight by insisting that he will be on hand to assist in training if he is asked to between now and the start of December.

“If he needs my help, I will go to his camp and help him,” Usyk told Sky Sports via Boxing Scene. “He is not 40 years old, he is 33, so he should keep working.

“Anthony, don’t stop. I understand that he wanted to win against me, but Anthony can’t give up. He must go forward.”

Fury was mocked for ‘running’ away from an undisputed heavyweight clash with Usyk by the latter’s manager, Egis Klimas. Fury has been trying to goad Anthony Joshua into fighting him in a long-awaited British grudge match over the last few days in spite of reports suggesting that an all-star bout with Usyk could be arranged in the not-too-distant future.

Fury posted a series of videos to Twitter on Thursday in which he continued to call out Joshua, who was beaten on points by Usyk for the second time in his career last month. Kilmas has since taken to the social media platform himself to poke fun at Fury, with the 34-year-old seemingly eager to chase a fight with Joshua rather than Usyk as things stand.

“This is an excellent way to run from Usyk,” wrote Kilmas. “Calling out others but not answering Usyk. JOKE!”

Fury had previously asked for a fee of £500m in order to face Usyk, who has established himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport in recent years. He made light work of Joshua in their first meeting to steal the Watford native’s heavyweight titles towards the end of last year before defending his belts with another points victory in Saudi Arabia in August.

Usyk wasted no time in calling out Fury after his latest win over Joshua, but it seems as though the idea of an undisputed fight between the pair may need to be put on hold for now.

A bout between Fury and Joshua would not be blocked by an obligation on Fury’s part to face a mandatory challenger, with the WBC having confirmed that it would be open to the ‘interesting’ possibility of a British heavyweight battle in the near future.

CAF Cup: Egyptian Teammates Trade Punches After Match

0

Two teammates from Egyptian club Future FC traded blows after drawing 0-0 at BUL FC of Uganda in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses told AFP that veteran goalkeeper Mahmoud ‘Genesh’ Abdel Rahim and midfielder Ahmed Refaat had to be separated by other members of the team as the African club season kicked off.

The cause of the anger between ‘Genesh’ and Refaat was not immediately known, but they constantly argued with each other during the second half.

Apart from the verbal clashes, Abdel Rahim was kept busy and made several superb saves as BUL sought to build an aggregate lead ahead of the return match in Egypt next weekend.

But the home team could not unlock the visitors’ defence, leaving Future as favourites to win the second leg and meet Buffles Borgou of Benin or Kallon FC of Sierra Leone in a last-32 tie.

BUL and Future are debutants in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League. After three qualifying round, 16 clubs advance to the group phase, where prize money kicks in.

While Ugandan clubs have made little impact in the Confederation Cup, the competition has been won by the two Egyptian giants, Al Ahly and Zamalek.

Ahly and Zamalek are competing in the richer and more prestigious CAF Champions League this season, leaving Future and Pyramids to carry the Egyptian flag in the Confederation Cup.

Goals were scarce in five first legs on Saturday with five matches producing only seven and BUL and Future were among the five teams who failed to find the net.

The match with the most goals came in the Cameroon capital of Yaounde where African debutants AS Sante Abeche of Chad lost 2-1 at Ferroviario Beira of Mozambigue.

Abeche were forced to stage their home fixture in the neighbouring central African country because Chad does not have an international-standard stadium.

In another first leg in Cameroon, local club PWD Bamenda led for much of a match against Elgeco Plus of Madagascar before conceding a late goal and having to settle for a 1-1 draw.

With Many Forests, Africa To grow Its Carbon Market

0

— In villages dotted across the African continent, locals living in once-heavily forested regions are starting to find their land in high demand.

In Kenya’s Gazi Bay, arguably the continent’s most famous mangrove restoration project, thousands of trees have been planted thanks to nearly a decade of concerted efforts to offset carbon dioxide released by faraway governments and companies seeking to improve their climate credentials.

The initiative was one of Africa’s first steps into the carbon market, where credits to emit greenhouse gases can be bought or sold.

Since then, dozens of similar schemes have sprouted across the continent, with African governments now looking to capitalize on this exploding global industry.

The continent is home to huge swaths of carbon-absorbing lands, with forest covering roughly 674 million hectares, or 22.7%, of Africa, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.

The Cuvette-Centrale Peatlands deep in the Congo Basin are alone capable of locking in up to 30 billion tons of carbon, or three years worth of the world’s emissions.

Waterside mangrove forests, which are more effective at sucking carbon out of the air than their land counterparts, have swelled in places like Gazi.

Community-led voluntary initiatives in Kenya, Mozambique and Ivory Coast that restore thousands of hectares of forest are supported by large international carbon credit organizations such as Blue Forest and the World Resources Institute.

CAFCC: Kwara United Host As Douanes Without Fans

0

The Confederation of African Football has ordered that the first leg of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies Confederation Cup match between Kwara United FC and AS Douanes of Niger Republic, be played behind closed doors.

Rising from the Pre-Match Meeting on Saturday, the Match Commissioner, General Tamba Langtombong from The Gambia, delivered CAF’s verdict on the match.

General Langtombong, who read out the messages concerning the match from CAF, added that arrangements needed to be made to comply with the directive.

He equally warned about the consequences of going against the decision, especially encroachment, which according to him, would count against the home team.

This means that Kwara United FC will be having additional challenge of playing without their motivational fans, supporters and followers.

The reasons for the decision might be connected to Covid-19 issues, especially as it has to do with inter-country engagements.

The decision will also deny Kwara United FC the opportunity of achieving economic and revenue values from the much-publicised and promisingly crucial match.

The club had earlier fixed ticket prices for the three categories of seats at the arena, which are the VVIP seats, the VIP seats and the popular side.

It had announced that the ticket fee for a VVIP seat would be N5000; VIP seat for N1000, with the ticket for the popular side advertised for N500.

The club, therefore, enjoined its fans and supporters to stay away from the venue, take advantage of the live streaming of the match, as arranged by the club, and also pray for victory.

The match is scheduled to hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Ilorin on Sunday evening. (NAN)

Beautiful Nigeria: Surame Cultural Landscape

0

Surame ancient kingdom existed around the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a very unique site with a surface of about 9 kilometres, in which one third of the relics has some traces of human settlement in the form of Hausa foundations, remains of compound enclosures, wall rubbles, wells, potsherds. Other features of the site are the walls, Grates, Baobab tree, trench and ditches.

The walls partly standing still have relics of the fallen ones intact. The walls were made from millet stalks and are generally rectangular in shape. For the gates, they are of two types namely the small and great ones, which are seven in number each.

The defensive walling and the gates are made of rocks. Within the site, there is baobab tree (Kuka) which oral tradition has it that the nagging wife of kanta was thrown into its trunk in a feat of anger. While, the trench (Siradi) is the place where trial was being made to any offender in the Kingdom. If one falls inside the Siradi (trench) he is going into Wuta (hell) and anyone who escapes the Siradi is going to Aijanna (paradise).

Around the kingdom, ditches were dug throughout the circumference of the great walls and thorns were planted that made it difficult for invading army to gain entrance into the kingdom.

Statements of authenticity and/or integrity
Surame Kingdom founded by Mohammadu kanta (the great warrior) could be said to be one of the wonders of human history, creativity and ingenuity. It is also probably the most massive stone – walled constructions in West Africa.

Mohammad kanta built fortresses to defend Surame Kingdom against Songhai reprisal attacks. The ruins of Kanta’s ancient capital of 16th and 17th century Surame were the sites of 1991 archaeological excavations by Dr. Leseigang. According to oral tradition, the mode of construction of the Kingdom manifested organizational ability, the great power and authority of kanta. The labour that built the kingdom was mobilized by the king and they included slaves and his subjects.

Comparison with other similar properties
The Surame is a good example of Dry Stone monument and could be compared to Great Zimbabwe and Damboshava Stone structures of Zimbabwe and Botswana. This dry stone monument still has most of the features intact like those of Great Zimbabwe and Damboshava.

Cross Continental World Cup Hosting In The Offing! Egypt-Greece-Saudi Arabia To Tackle Uruguay, Argentina, Chile And Paraguay

A cross continental World Cup bid may be the other of the day as struggle for the hosting the 2030 edition gather momentum.

The edition will be the centennial as World Cup itself began in 1930.

The next edition in 2026 is already a ‘united’ venture featuring US, Canada and Mexico – the first three-nation co-hosting.

On the heels of this, Saudi Arabia in Asia and Egypt in Africa have initially proposed a joint bid. They have now enlisted Greece in Europe to make it a three-continent hosting.

Egypt had earlier made a bid for 2020, but lost to South  Africa. Last month, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay formalized their joint candidacy for the organization of the 2030 World Cup which will mark the 100th year  of the competition, the first edition of which was disputed in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Another bid that has surfaced is that of  Spain and Portugal. Morocco, a perennial candidate for the World Cup hosting, having been left out by Spain and Portugal, are considering another bid.

Also on the card is a joint bid of Israel, United Arab Emirates  and Bahrain. FIFA will designate the host country in 2024.

Queen Elizabeth 11 Is Featured On Several Currencies. What Happens?

1

Queen Elizabeth II has been depicted on British banknotes and coins for decades. Her portrait also has been featured on currencies in dozens of other places around the world, in a reminder of the British empire’s colonial reach.

So what happens next after her death this week? It will take time for the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries to swap out the monarchs on their money.

Here’s a look at what is next for the paper cash featuring the late queen:

SWITCHING MONARCHS

The queen’s portrait on British notes and coins is expected to be replaced by a likeness of the new King Charles III, but it won’t be immediate.

“Current banknotes featuring the image of Her Majesty The Queen will continue to be legal tender,” the Bank of England said. An announcement on existing paper money issued by the U.K.’s central bank will be made after the official 10-day mourning period has ended, it said.

The Royal Mint, which is the official maker of British coins, said all coins with her portrait “remain legal tender and in circulation,” with more information to come later.

“As we respect this period of respectful mourning, we continue to strike coins as usual,” the Royal Mint said on its website.

With 4.7 billion U.K. banknotes worth 82 billion pounds ($95 billion) in circulation and about 29 billion coins, British money bearing the queen’s image will likely be in circulation for years.

“Rather than all of the current coins and notes being handed in, the process will be a gradual one and many of the coins featuring portraits of Queen Elizabeth II will remain in circulation for many years to come,” according to Coin Expert, a British coin research website.

After Charles takes the crown at his coronation, a new portrait will need to be taken to use on redesigned notes and coins, the website said.

Coins featuring him will show him facing to the left, replacing the queen’s rightward gaze in line with tradition dating to the 17th century. It dictates monarchs be shown in profile and in opposite direction to their predecessors.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES?

Other nations’ currencies that feature the queen — from Australian, Canadian and Belizean dollars — also will be updated with the new monarch, but the process could take longer, because “it is much easier to enforce a new design in the country where it originates, rather than in other countries where different jurisdiction may take place,” the Coin Expert website said.

The Bank of Canada said its current $20 banknote, made of synthetic polymer, is designed “to circulate for years to come.”

“There is no legislative requirement to change the design within a prescribed period when the Monarch changes,” the Bank of Canada said.

In general, when a new portrait subject is chosen for Canadian money, the process begins with drawing up a fresh design, and a new note is ready to be issued “a few years later,” the bank said.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said it will issue all of its stock of coins depicting the queen before new ones go out with Charles’ image. The queen also is featured on the $20 bill, which is made “infrequently” and there is no “plan to destroy stock or shorten the life of existing banknotes just because they show the Queen,” the bank said.

“It will be several years before we need to introduce coins featuring King Charles the Third, and longer until stocks of $20 notes are exhausted,” it added.

THE QUEEN’S CURRENCY

She first appeared on money when she was still a princess. That was in 1935, when Canada’s $20 bill featured 8-year-old Princess Elizabeth, whose grandfather King George V was then the monarch, as part of a new series of notes.

Canadian $20 bills were updated with a new portrait of the queen in 1954, a year after her coronation, and her portrait also started appearing on other currencies around the world, mainly British colonies and Commonwealth countries.

British bills didn’t get her image until 1960 — seven years after her coronation. That’s when the Bank of England was granted permission to use her likeness on paper money, starting with the 1-pound note, though the formal and regal image was criticized for being too severe and unrealistic.

She became the first monarch to be depicted on British banknotes. British coins, meanwhile, have featured kings and queens for more than 1,000 years.

CURRENCIES OUTSIDE THE U.K.

At one time, Queen Elizabeth II appeared on at least 33 different currencies, more than any other monarch, an achievement noted by Guinness World Records.

Her image is still featured on money in places where she remains a beloved figure, such as Canada, and continue to incorporate the Union Jack into their flags, like Australia and New Zealand.

She’s also found on notes and coins issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the monetary authority for a group of small nations including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Other places have long stopped putting her face on their currency.

After Jamaica gained independence from Britain in 1962, its central bank replaced the queen on paper notes with portraits of national heroes such as Marcus Garvey.

Notes in the Seychelles now feature local wildlife instead of the queen. Bermuda did a similar revamp, though the queen retains a minor position on bills. Trinidad and Tobago swapped in a coat of arms after it became a republic.

Hong Kong dollars issued after Britain handed its colony back to Beijing in 1997 feature Chinese dragons and skyscrapers on the Asian financial center’s skyline.

PSG Denies Rift Between Mbappe And Neymar

0

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier, has denied that the club’s star duo Kylian Mbappe and Neymar are at odds.

PSG beat Juventus 2-1 in their first UEFA Champions League game this season at Parc des Princes on Tuesday. In the second half of that game, Mbappe broke into the box from right. He was facing the opponent’s goalkeeper while another defender of Juventus rushed to him from left.

As a result, Mbappe didn’t have a good angle to shoot at that moment. By contrast, Neymar was totally unguarded and facing the open goal. However, Mbappe took the shot instead of passing the ball to Neymar. He didn’t score and failed to secure a hat trick.

PSG were leading 2-0 back then. After Mbappe blew that opportunity, Juventus soon scored a goal to turn the score into 2-1. PSG were thrown into an unfavorable situation in the following 38 minutes of the game. If Mbappe had passed it to Neymar to score and expand their lead to 3-0, PSG could have dealt with the situation in an easier way.

Neymar seemed upset with Mbappe’s choice for that play. The 23-year-old French striker was under a lot criticism after the game.

“The relationship between Ney and Kylian is very good, and I’m not giving you the runaround,” Galtier said on Friday. “They are together in the training exercises, they are often together in the warm-ups. Yes, there was that match situation. And I discussed it yesterday with Kylian, who I think, has discussed it with Ney.”

“There are two seconds when you have to make a decision, and Kylian is concentrating on striking the ball,” Galtier added. “I am convinced that Kylian will make more decisive passes to Ney, as Ney is capable of making decisive passes to Kylian. But I haven’t felt anything negative since the game in relation to this chance.”

Russia To Pull Back Troops From Kharkiv Region In Ukraine

0

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced Saturday that it was pulling back troops from two areas in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region where a Ukrainian counteroffensive has made significant advances in the past week.

The news came after days of apparent advances by Ukraine south of Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, in what could become the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to seize the capital, Kyiv, at the start of the nearly seven-month war.

“The Russian army in these days is demonstrating the best that it can do — showing its back,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video released by his office Saturday night. “And, of course, it’s a good decision for them to run.”

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said troops would be regrouped from the Balakliya and Izyum areas to the eastern Donetsk region. Izyum was a major base for Russian forces in the Kharkiv region, and earlier this week social media videos showed residents of Balakliya joyfully cheering as Ukrainian troops moved in.

Konashenkov said the Russian move was being made “in order to achieve the stated goals of the special military operation to liberate Donbas,’” an eastern area home to two separatist regions that Russia has declared sovereign.

The claim of a withdrawal to concentrate on Donetsk is similar to the justification Russia gave for pulling back its forces from the Kyiv region earlier this year when they failed to take the capital.

Igor Girkin, a Russian who was an early leader of a Moscow-backed separatist uprising in Donetsk in 2014, sneered at the portrayal of the pullback being strategic. On the messaging app Telegram, he acidly called it “the brilliant (clearly within the framework of the plan and even ahead of schedule) operation to transfer the cities of Izyum, Balakliya and Kupiansk to respected Ukrainian partners.”

Earlier Saturday, Ukrainian officials claimed major gains in the Kharkiv region, saying their troops had cut off vital supplies to Izyum.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Nikolenko also suggested troops had retaken Kupiansk, a town along the main supply route to Izyum, long a focus on the Russian front line and the site of heavy artillery and other fighting.

Nikolenko tweeted a photo showing soldiers in front of what he said was a government building in Kupiansk, 73 kilometers (45 miles) north of Izyum.
