Exploring Wallblake House, Anguilla

0

Wallblake House is a heritage plantation house which serves also as a museum annex, located on the British overseas territory island of Anguilla. As one of the oldest buildings on the island, it has been built in 1787 by Will Blake who was a sugar planter.

It is clear that the house has been built then because of a brick placed in the northern side of the old kitchen and bakery on which the date was carved and it is still faintly visible.

We do not know, however, how long it took to build and how much expertise it required or how much labour, but here again, we do know that it must have taken at least eighteen months to build (possibly much longer) because of the cut stone involved, some of which may have come from East End or even Scrub Island and the lime used to hold the stone together which had to be made from burnt coral and shells, and then mixed with molasses and marl.

Probably in 1790s, the French have destroyed the house, however the British have rebuilt it and today has been fully restored with its kitchen complex, stables and slave quarters.

The roof of the house if formed with Guyanese hardwood, which is shingled with wooden upper section.

The house has been completely refurbished in 2004 with an official cost of around $92,000, which made it one of the ten places to be seen and popular on the island.

Even though it is a private house, serving as a living quarters for the priest from Saint Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church, people can go in and see the premises, and from time to time serves as a museum annex and venue for art shows, flower shops and marriage receptions.

According to BudgIT, allocation to the security sector witnessed a steady increase from 2011 to 2022, but with very little visibility on the level of disbursement and utilisation of the appropriated funds. The federal government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Nigerians travelling to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to be guided by the new visa regime introduced by the UAE government.

With the new visa regime, the UAE has stopped issuing tourist visas to persons under the age of 40 years, except for those applying for family visas.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja and signed by Francisca Omayuli, spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “the attention of the Federal government of Nigeria has been drawn to a video on social media, showing purportedly stranded Nigerians, who arrived the airport in Dubai UAE on 29th August 2022 but were denied entry into the country despite having valid visas.”

Domestic airlines suffer low patronage as fares soar

0

Domestic airlines have seen passenger traffic drop across routes in Nigeria on the back of skyrocketing prices of air tickets.

BusinessDay’s investigations show that the rise in ticket prices has discouraged many travellers from travelling in recent times.

After the suspension of passenger flights by Dana and Aero, there were expectations that few operating airlines with insufficient aircraft across Nigerian airports would result in passenger glut.

But airlines are now facing low patronage across various routes as a result of the increase in airfares.

A visit to the local airports in Lagos on Wednesday morning showed a scanty terminal with few travellers processing their boarding passes as against the usual early morning surge of travellers.

A one-way ticket from Lagos to Abuja on Wednesday on Air Peace cost between N85,000 and N100,000 as against N35,000 charged in January 2022. The airline’s one-way ticket from Lagos to Port Harcourt cost between N80,000 and N95,000 as against N30,000 charged in January 2022. One-way Lagos-Kano flight also cost between N80,000 and N100,000 as against N40,000.

Green Africa, which started operations last year with Lagos-Abuja fares for as low as N18,000, currently charges between N76,000 and N89,000 on the same route. The airline also charges between N72,000 and N88,000 for its Lagos-Port Harcourt flight.

United Nigeria Airlines has also raised fares from N28,000 since February to N80,000 for Lagos-Abuja and Lagos-Port Harcourt flights.
