First UN-chartered Ship Carrying Grain To Africa Leaves Ukraine

0

The first shipment of grain from Ukraine under a World Food Programme (WFP) initiative to aid countries experiencing famine has left a Black Sea port aboard a United Nations-chartered ship.

Leaving the port of Pivdennyi in the city of Yuzhne on Sunday was the Lebanese-flagged Brave Commander, as reported by regional Governor Maksym Marchenko.

For one of the five countries the UN has identified as being at risk of starvation, Ethiopia, the grain will be unloaded in Djibouti and then transferred to the country.

“Today was very positive,” WFP Ukraine coordinator Denise Brown told The Associated Press. “We are very, very hopeful that all the actors around this agreement will come together on what is really an issue for humanity.”

Brown said the authorities were looking at using rail to augment the shipments of grain, and the Ukrainian agriculture ministry was also planning on opening a new truck route to Poland.

Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov was in Yuzhne to oversee the ship’s loading. “I hope that other ships chartered by the World Food Programme will come to our ports. I hope there will soon be two, three more ships,” he said.

Ukrainian authorities have not released details on when the Brave Commander will arrive in Djibouti, citing security concerns.

The cargo was funded with donations from WFP, the US Agency for International Development and several private donors.

Ukraine and Russia reached a deal with Turkey on July 22 to restart Black Sea grain deliveries, addressing the major export disruption that has occurred since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

The Brave Commander, which docked at the Pivdennyi port on Friday, is the first UN vessel carrying humanitarian food assistance to set sail since Kyiv and Moscow penned the agreement.

“We are definitely planning other ships to leave the ports of Ukraine, to help people around the world,” Marianne Ward, WFP deputy country director in Ukraine, told journalists. “This should just be the first of many humanitarian ships to leave the ports.”

The first commercial ship carrying grain, the Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, left on August 1 and was approaching the Syrian port of Tartous on Sunday.

In total, 16 vessels have departed from Ukraine since the July deal, according to Kyiv.

The WFP said a record 345 million people in 82 countries face acute food insecurity and up to 50 million people in 45 countries are on the brink of famine and risk being tipped over the edge without humanitarian support.

Elena Faige Neroba, a business development manager at the brokerage company Maxigrain, told Al Jazeera that Ukraine is “ready to supply more than 50 million metric tonnes of agricultural products”.

“The main challenge is [posed by] floating mines,” she said. “Ship owners are waiting to see how the passage of other vessels goes.”

Neroba added that departures from a significant exporter such as Ukraine will help reduce the price of food items globally.

Food prices dropped 8.6 percent in July from the previous month, particularly because of lower wheat and vegetable oil prices, according to the UN index.

However, food prices remain significantly higher compared to last year.

Nigeria’s IGP Orders Adequate Security Around Schools, Others

0

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the deployment of adequate security around schools, hospitals and critical infrastructures across the country.

The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this known in a statement via its Twitter handle on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

The IGP gave the directive while reviewing reports from commands and formations on the security situations across the country.

“The IGP has equally ordered regular patrols, stop and search, raids, and show of force by tactical commanders to clamp down on pockets of crime and criminality recorded in some states of the federation.”

He tasked police officers to prioritize the use of intelligence gathering networks while charging officers and men of the force to take the fight against crime to the doorsteps of suspected criminal elements with a view to flushing them from their hideouts.

The IGP also called on citizens to cooperate with the Force, warning police officers to be professional in discharging their duties.

Wildfire Halted In France, Highway Reopens

0

Firefighters have managed to halt the spread of a “monster” blaze in southwest France, allowing authorities to reopen a stretch of highway to traffic ahead of a busy travel weekend.

“The fire did not advance overnight thanks to the significant means employed,” the local prefect said in a tweet Saturday.

Reinforcements from across Europe helped local firefighters tackle the blaze which has ravaged forests in France’s Gironde region since Tuesday and forced 10,000 people to evacuate their homes.

The fire has been fanned by wind and scorching temperatures of up to 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in recent days.

The southwest of France had already been hit by fires in July that destroyed more than 20,000 hectares of forest and temporarily forced almost 40,000 people from their homes.

Successive heatwaves have sparked wildfires across Europe this summer, throwing the spotlight on the risks of climate change to industry and livelihoods.

Storms are expected to sweep through France on Saturday night, bringing down temperatures and prompting severe weather warnings.

Over a thousand French firefighters were supported by hundreds of firefighters from across Europe, as well as trucks and waterbombing aircrafts, which continued to arrive Saturday.

Hundreds of firemen are also fighting fires further north in Brittany, where a blaze has burned 400 hectares, as well as in the Jura region in the east, where more than 500 hectares have burned.

More than 60,000 hectares (230 square miles) have gone up in flames so far in France this year, six times the full-year average for 2006-2021, data from the European Forest Fire Information System shows.

Quarterly Profit: Saudi Oil giant Tops Own Record With $48.4bn

0

Saudi oil giant Aramco has broken its own record with a $48.4bn (£39.8bn) profit for the second quarter of 2022.

It is a 90% year-on-year increase and marks the biggest earnings for the world’s largest energy exporter since its public listing three years ago.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has seen oil and gas prices skyrocket.

Russia is one of the world’s biggest exporters but Western nations have pledged to curb their dependence on the country for their energy needs.

According to Bloomberg, the Saudi oil giant’s figure represents “the biggest quarterly adjusted profit of any listed company”.

As well as the record profits, the state-owned Saudi energy giant announced it would keep its dividend unchanged at $18.8bn for the third quarter.

The company said it would keep expanding to satisfy demand.

“While global market volatility and economic uncertainty remain, events during the first half of this year support our view that ongoing investment in our industry is essential both to help ensure markets remain well supplied and to facilitate an orderly energy transition,” Aramco president and chief executive Amin Nasser said.

“In fact, we expect oil demand to continue to grow for the rest of the decade, despite downward economic pressures on short-term global forecasts,” he added.

Oil prices were already rising before the Ukraine war as economies started to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and demand outstripped supply.

The world’s biggest oil producers, including ExxonMobil, Chevron and BP, have all posted huge earnings this year – leading to growing calls on governments to impose a windfall tax amid an alarming rise in living costs.

In June, US President Joe Biden said Exxon had made “more money than God this year”.

Saudi Arabia is the largest single producer in Opec, a group representing the world’s biggest oil producers.

Last week Opec+ agreed to raise production slightly in an effort to help ease high oil prices.

However, the latest production output increase is at a much slower pace than in recent months.

The decision was a blow to leaders including Mr Biden, who have called for production to be ramped up.

Exploring Gothic Styled Turaida Castle In Latvia

0

Turaida Castle is a recently reconstructed castle from medieval times, located in the historic Vidzeme region, in the Republic of Latvia.

Situated opposite from the Gauja River from Sigulda, the castle dominates the Museum Reserve, which visually is the most impressive element it has.

Built out of red bricks, it has a Gothic style, where the first evidence of its construction suggests that it was built in 1214 by the Archbishop of Riga, Albert.

Before the brick castle was built, on the same site there has been a wooden castle of the Livonian leader Caupo of Turaida.

The development of the castle continued throughout the years, and the castle slowly started losing strategic importance.

Badly damaged by fire in 1716, and not reconstructed, its condition slowly deteriorated and fell into ruin.

In the 1970s there have been archaeological excavations, which followed restoration and conservation works that slowly started showing how the castle was looking in the past.

The surroundings of the Turaida Castle are simply unique and amazing and from the main tower, one can witness the alluringly beautiful landscape of picturesque Gauja valley.

One of the important landmarks of Latvia, today this castle has many visitors who want to witness how the life has been in the past in Latvia.
